Housing: Multijurisdictional cooperation is critical, as is listening to and supporting the individuals and organizations already leading in this space. Centering equity-seeking perspectives is critical for us to reach the vision of a livable city fo all.
Public Safety: While many of these decisions are made at the regional and provincial level, I am very supportive of human centred approaches that recognize trauma and its intergenerational impacts. We have to get to people, support and invest in them before they become part of the justice system.
Indigenous Sovereignty: I would also support intentional approaches to Indigenous-led placemaking across Waterloo. Our land acknowledgement practices are not very deep when we can't anchor them in the geography we experience day-to-day.
Social Services: Investing in intergenerational wellbeing is a major part of my campaign. I want to see young people's perspectives imbedded in our decision-making structures - at the committee level and in terms of supporting each of our council positions, mirroring what Mike Morrice has proposed federally.
Transportation: We need a really integrated approach to transportation that bridges old ways to new ways. I'd like public transportation to be FREE for people under age 18 so that parents can buy a pass and know that their kids are always covered and so that children learn that public transportation should be a first choice for getting around the city. While I believe that sidewalks should be cleared to create better accessibility throughout our winter months, it's tricky to get the approach right. Some places (Europe, U.S.) have opted for district heating so they use captured heat from underground infrastructure to melt snow and ice and keep sidewalks clear. Right now, even shovelled walks are thwarted by windrows left by snowploughs. We need to collectively look at the solution space and determine what is the right-size fit for our community.
