BACKSTORY/ ROLE IN MISSION

Mara Tabares grew up on the Lost Mesa preserve in Arizona. She is half-Navajo. Her mother was the preserve caretaker. When she was in her twenties, ready to take over the preserve when her mother retired, the preserve fell to an attack by the Society of the Evening Star. After the attack, Mara joined the Knights of the Dawn and worked to prevent the Society of the Evening Star from opening Zzyzx. She continued to work for the good of the preserves after the crisis was averted and tried along with others to restore Lost Mesa. Eventually, it was restored, but in the process, a new caretaker was chosen as part of negotiations with the creatures living there. Her chance to become a caretaker gone, Mara poured herself deeper into her work for the Knights of the Dawn. When the mission came up to restore the Rio Branco preserve, Mara volunteered to assist. Stan Sorenson, the current captain of the Knights of the Dawn, nominated that she take on the role of caretaker, due to her extensive work to restore the fallen preserves. Mara accepted the role gratefully.
