Stakeholders
Village people
Domestic animals
BACKGROUND : World health Organisation statistics shows that approximately 2.2 billion people lack safe drinking water globally and 3.4 million people, mostly children, die annually from water-related diseases such as diarrhoea , cholera etc .
We have to planned to implement the pond filtration system in a village called Thangalacheri village located at Tirumangalam block of Madurai district in Tamilnadu , India . The total population of this village is 1,862 peoples and there are 519 houses in that village. The main source of water for this village is the public water taps provided at the street corners . These taps were laid long before and have often reported for contamination of water .
• No of taps available - “ 4 ”
• water supply hours - 2 to 4 hours / day (mostly the water supply is once in 2 days)
There is also fresh water pond located in this village , which is mostly used by animals . Though it is fresh water pond , people cannot use the water from pond due to its contamination . In the year 2014 , 15 persons at Thangalacheri village in Tirumangalam block got fever at the same time, and they were treated at the nearby Sathangudi primary health centre and water contamination was found to be the reason for the spurt in fever cases in the village, and some of the affected persons tested positive for typhoid.
Hence there is a need of safe and hygienic drinking water in this village and so we have planned to implement the pond filtration system in this village .
Impact
The main aim of providing a pond filtration system to Thangalacheri village is to meet the existing water shortage .This village meets its daily water demand only through the municipal water supply , which is also uncertain during summers. Hence the successful implementation of the filtration system will result in better water management and reduce the pollution of the pond in the village. Moreover the polluted pond water is unfit for human as well as animal usage. But with the filtration system in function the water can be filtered and used for domestic purposes in addition to the usage of animals. This pond filtration system would be a very effective method to harvest the rain water which usually gets polluted along with the pond water. The people in the village are mostly daily wage workers and laborers who can't afford other water supplies . Thus the efficient usage of the existing pond would be an economical option. The polluted pond provides way to the spreading of diseases and this can be completely stopped by installing the pond filtration system. Overall the pond filtration system is the most needed and feasible system which can ensure clean water to the village to overcome the existing water problem.
