Participating in the Operation Smile Color Run 2024 was an incredibly enriching experience. Collaborating with students from various schools like ISB, NIST, and ASTER was both exciting and challenging.
My role was primarily to help with the registration process. I checked the list of participants, distributed the appropriate color bands, handed out event clothes, and assisted those registering on the spot. The experience gave me a profound sense of accomplishment. Engaging with participants and witnessing their excitement created a positive emotional impact. In addition, this experience created ideas to participate in similar events or even lead similar initiatives in the future. An understanding of the impact and logistics of such events on the community has sparked an interest in event planning and management.
Through this experience, I recognized my strengths in organization and communication. I demonstrated these skills by managing the registration process and communicating effectively with participants. However, I also identified areas of growth such as improved adaptability to unexpected challenges and improved problem-solving ability in dynamic environments. This experience laid the groundwork for me to start and plan future CAS experiences.
CAS Learning Outcomes:
3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
The Greenhawks Greenbox project was an initiative I started last year to promote recycling at school. By placing Greenboxes around the campus, my goal was to encourage students to dispose of plastic bottles and paper properly. This year, through the Greenhawks Club, we continued the project, collecting recyclables and ensuring they were properly processed. Seeing students use the Greenbox made me feel proud because it showed that small actions could lead to positive change.
One of the challenges I faced was keeping students engaged and reminding them to use the Greenbox correctly. At times, I noticed that some students would still throw non-recyclable items into the box, which made sorting more difficult. To solve this, I worked with my team to spread awareness through posters and short announcements, explaining why proper recycling is important. This experience helped me develop better communication and leadership skills, as I had to find creative ways to encourage participation.
Starting and maintaining this initiative also helped me understand the importance of planning and organization. At first, I only had a general idea of how the Greenbox would work, but over time, I learned to plan collection schedules, coordinate with others, and improve the system.
Through this project, I became more aware of the global issue of waste management and sustainability. I realized that even though recycling is a well-known concept, many people don’t take the time to separate their waste. This made me think about how small actions, like using the Greenbox, can contribute to a larger movement toward environmental sustainability.
