Towny is a Minecraft Java plugin that lets players create organized communities called towns and nations, moving beyond solo play. It uses a system of residents, towns, and nations to manage land ownership and permissions, encouraging teamwork and providing land protection.
Players become residents of towns and can buy land plots within them. They control who can interact with their land. Towns can join together to form larger nations. A key benefit of towns is protection from mobs, PvP (depending on settings), fire, explosions, and griefing, creating a safer environment.
Understanding Residents (individual players in Towny), Towns (settlements formed by residents with a Mayor), and Townblocks (16x16 land units towns claim, which also align to Minecraft chunks) is crucial.
Joining or creating a town offers benefits like protection from threats, a sense of community through collaboration and trade, the ability to own land within the town, access to shared resources like farms and shops, and a town spawn point for easy teleportation. This provides security and a more structured gameplay.
However, it's very important to know that starting your own town is a significant undertaking with a substantial upfront in-game cost, typically at least $500. For most players, it's highly recommended to consider joining an existing town first. This allows you to immediately enjoy the benefits of Towny's protection and community without the initial financial burden and management responsibilities of founding a new settlement.
Firstly, you do not need to become a mayor. To do it properly and lead a small group of players requires some level of work, and it is perfectly reasonable to join an existing town. Though, if you don't want to be forced to build near other players, there are benefits ot creating a town consisting of just yourself, most importantly is protection of your builds from strangers.Â
To become a Towny mayor and start a town, you first need find an unclaimed wilderness area (towns can't be made in other towns' land). Once you have a location, creating your town is easy. Stand where you want the center, then type /t new [townname] or /t create [townname] (like /t new Eldoria). After paying the in-game money cost, your town is created, and you're the mayor.
As mayor, immediately set your town's homeblock and spawn. At the center, type /t set homeblock. Then, at the exact spot for the spawn, type /t set spawn. Your town starts with this one block. To get more land, stand next to your town's land in unclaimed wilderness and type /t claim. Each new plot has a cost assiciated with claiming. Also, set initial permissions using /t set perm [resident/ally/outsider] [build/destroy/switch/itemuse] [on/off] (e.g., /t set perm outsider build off). Defaults should work fine, though. Finally, set a welcome message with /t set board [your message] (e.g., /t set board Welcome to Eldoria!). These steps are key for your town's basic functions and security.
/t new [townname] Creates a new town with the specified name.
/t set homeblock Sets the current location as the town's homeblock and spawn location.

To enjoy Towny, communicate and be respectful in town chat. Learn and follow your town's rules. Contribute to your town through projects, taxes, and being helpful.
Mayors should plan their town, set fair taxes/permissions, use ranks to delegate, keep residents informed, and watch the town bank. Towns have daily upkeep; going into debt can lead to disbandment. Inactive towns may be deleted.
