When one goes to a foreign country to learn a new language, they are often "forced" to learn new words, hear the words spoken, and then must use the words to interact with others.
This is the core theory behind Memrise. Language learning comes down to three parts:
Learn - learn new vocabulary and grammar;
Immerse - improve the skill of understanding a new language by listening to content that is just above learner's current level;
Communicate - gain confidence in speaking the new language by practicing with a GPT-powered AI partner (Chowdhry, 2023).
Space repetition is a learning technique that involves reviewing materials at scheduled increasing intervals over time to improve long-term knowledge retention. The idea is to revisit information at strategically spaced intervals, with each review sessions scheduled just before you are likely to forget the newly learnt material. This method capitalizes on the psychological spacing effect, which suggests that information is better retained when studies multiple times over longer intervals of time (Tabibian, 2019).
Memrise algorithm predicts when a learner is likely to forget a newly learnt word or sentence, and provide the learner the opportunity to review it. If the word or sentence is reviewed correctly, the interval increases for the next review.
Ex: Next review in: 4 hours > 12 hours > 24 hours > 6 days > 12 days > 48 days > 96 days > 6 months.
However, when a word or sentence is reviewed incorrectly, it will move back to the very first interval (in our example above, it will be reviewed again in 4 hours) (Memrise, n.d.-c).
As discussed above, Memrise believes the foundation of learning a language is the "Learn-Immerse-Communicate" (L.I.C) method. The challenge often comes at the final stage - "Communicate", which ideally, one could go to a country that speaks the language to fully perfect their communication. It is also common for learners to feel embarrassed when speaking in their newly learnt language. In order to overcome this confidence gap, the company created MemBot to help learners practice language skills anytime, anywhere (Memrise, 2022).
MemBot is an AI language partner constructed with GPT-3 Artificial Intelligence. The technology create human-like conversations on any subjects. Learners can interact with the MemBot by choosing to chat, play a game, or complete a mission with it (Memrise, 2022).
