MEMRiSE

Introduction

Have you ever thought about learning a new language? Maybe you did, but you were not entirely too sure where to start. "Should I take a course first?", you ask yourself, "should I buy a grammar and vocabulary book and start from the basics?", and pretty soon: "do I have to make a new friend that speak the language to help me"? I remember when I first came to Canada, one of the things that my ESL teacher always yelled across the room was "Speak English!!!" whenever she caught us speaking in our native language. Indeed, it is very important to be able to learn the basics, but even more important to practice speaking it with someone to apply the learning.

There are quite a number of language learning tools and apps throughout the years, from early DVDs from Rosetta Stone, to Duolingo in the app store. Language learning has evolved and grown tremendously, and the newer technologies can help mitigate the concerns and minimize learning a new language by yourself. Here, you will learn more about the innovative and research based language learning tool - Memrise.

What is MEMRiSE?

Memrise is a British language learning company that uses space repetition and artificial intelligence to help learners acquire a language faster, and overcome the lack of confidence when learning and speaking a new language.

How it Started

MEMRiSE was founded by three friends - Ed Cooke, Ben Whately and Greg Detre. They met while studying at Oxford together. After graduation, Ed studied memory techniques and became a Grandmaster of Memory. Greg earned his PhD in Neuroscience at Princeton, and Ben moved to Qiqihaer in China to attempt learning Chinese by applying his theories in language acquisition. They joined forced after, and combined their experiences and research to create Memrise (Memrise, n.d.-a).

Why Memrise?

This is a company that is built on research, but experiments on cutting edge technology to help normal people become multilingual.
