As you can tell from the video, a flipped classroom is a pedegocial method where students are provided lectures outside the classroom using technology, while assignments with concepts are provided in class through activites ( Jamaludin & Osman, 2014, p.124). It is said that this method enhances behavioural engagment, emotional engagment, cognitive engagment, and agentic engagement, all which promotes active learning (Jamaludin & Osman, 2014, p.125). In turn, this allow for the limbic system to be activated, which furthers engagment. By focusing on how to manipulate knowledge and apply it, educators have the time to aide those who may need more scaffolding and allow those who understand the concept to work together.
The general lesson plan of what a flipped classroom looks like is the following (Quigley, 2013):
Introduce Content (Outside-Classroom)
Provide lecture materials using technolgy that students can access at home, on their phone, their laptops, or at school. This can be either slides, videos, observations, and/or podcast. (It is recommended that it takes no more than 20 minutes).
Guided Practice
When students come in the next day, provide a guided practice or formative assessment to determine who has an understanding of concepts and who needs additional help.
Group Work
Those who have a solid understanding can be put into groups to work on group work (eg. discussions, projects, labs) while those who are still struggling can get have the educator provide further scaffolding.
Independent Work
Depending on the activity planned, you can then move onto independent work (eg. working on lab report, individual projects). This can be assignments or activities to further their understanding and/or knowledge.
Extension Activity
The last thing is to provide an extension activity. This activty can be very simple such as an observation, an exit slip, or a question that gets them thinking about the bigger picture.
In the next section, there are two pedagoical methods that can be used during a flipped classroom or even just a traditional classroom, which activates the limbic system, and increases engagement!
