Increasing engagment is a crucial pedagoical strategy to maximize learning outcomes and experiences. The neuroscience behind engagment heavily relies on invoking positive emotions and motivation. Positive emotions (eg. content, excitement) have been shown to enhance memory functions whereas negative emotions (eg. stress) impairs learning and memory (Chai et al. 2017, p.3). Furthermore, emotional stimuli is shown to consume more attentional resources than non-emotional stimuli (Chai et al. 2017, p.2). On the other hand, motivation brings out curiosity, which encourages further exploration and can prepare the brain to learn and remember (Chai et al. 2017, p.3). Both emotions and motivation are the foundations of engagment in learning. In this section, you will be provided with tools and pedagogical methods in increasing engagment in classrooms backed by neuroscience.
