Humanities and Social Science are essential to early childhood education because they help children to learn about the environment, history, culture, and society (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). The study of people in their surroundings, the ideas, abilities, and perspectives required to develop as human beings is known as social studies (Howard & Mayesky, 2022).
The development of children's appreciation of diverse cultures has to be a normal and accepted aspect of the program (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Howard and Mayesky (2022) stated that it should be incorporated into the curriculum and the environment in innovative, respectful, and engaging ways. These include (Howard & Mayesky, 2022):
A strong belief in each child's value.
An accepting attitude towards each child as an individual.
Unqualified support for each child's development of emotional, social, physical, cognitive and language.
Children can learn about different perspectives and values by participating in activities such as role-playing, storytelling, and also small conversations. By incorporating Humanities and Social Science into early childhood education, children can respect those who make valuable contributions to the community by promoting curiosity, problem-solving skills, and a sense of identity (Howard & Mayesky, 2022).
Piaget’s constructivist theory mentions that active interaction with the surrounding is essential as it enables children to continually expand their understanding of the world (Simply Psychology, 2024). According to Vygotsky's theory, social interaction and cultural background play a key role for cognitive development (Simply Psychology, 2025). In real world practices teachers can promote creativity in social science education by allowing children to contribute their opinions on history, society, or culture through collaborative storytelling, role-playing, or group discussions. Engaging in active and social interactions supports children to understand the curriculum more clearly.

(Van Syl, 2014)
0-2 years: Print photographs of families and create a family photo wall. This helps infant's early social recognition and sense of belonging which is a crucial skill to develop.
(V, 2019)
2-3 years: Learning about each other (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Ask children to bring their baby photographs and hang them on a wall (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Make a group and ask the older children to match their current peers. This activity improves memory, promotes discussions about identity and personal development, and helps children to recognise facial features.
(Defalco, 2016)
3-5 years: Puppets for feeling (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Provide children the materials to make puppets and ask them to make a puppet for the emotion they are in right now or few emotions. This activity promotes children to understand different emotions and after the task is completed discuss different emotions with children. Through this it develops the understanding that other people feel the same emotions as myself.
(Hand, 2019)
6-8 years: Discussing about flags (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Ask children to name different country flags and discuss with them about the meanings of each symbol and colours (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Later divide into groups and ask them to make a flag for the class including the importance of the class (Howard & Mayesky, 2022). Children's creativity, teamwork, and sense of unity are all encouraged by this activity while providing the knowledge of different country flags.
0-2 years: Peekaboo game with family members' photographs.
Materials needed - photographs of family members
This strengthens the sense of belonging and supports infants to recognise the family members as well as promotes early language skills.

My own creative characteristics, such as my ability to think creatively and promote inclusivity, will significantly improve my early childhood education teaching abilities. By including practical learning activities such as understanding different cultures through music, exploring nature and understanding belongingness helps to promote creativity in an interesting way. These will also support children in understanding various societies. Also I will use engaging teaching strategies to meet the needs of each child by using appropriate learning materials, digital tools and reflective practices as this also aligns with EYLF outcome four, children are confident and involved learners (Australian Government Department of Education, 2022). My main goal is to prepare children for the future by developing their creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and offer them a deeper understanding of the world using the creation of an inclusive and engaging classroom.
