Together with Peter Werle we organized a session (20k) on Laser Gas Analyzers and Their Application in the Geochemical Sciences during the 2013 Goldschmidt conference (August 25 - 30, Firenze, Italy).Oral presentations (including one medal lecture by J. Chappellaz) and posters covered measurement challenges in the emerging field of laser based gas analysis. The focus was on the presentation of novel sensors and applications covering stable isotope ratios, aerosols, (Ant)arctic ice-cores, ecosystem monitoring, carbon sequestration and land-atmosphere surface exchange of greenhouse gases. We also paid attention to problems of validation, calibration, and inter-comparison studies, with the aim to increase awareness and acceptance of laser-based sensors, and to promote a better understanding of the technology and the state-of-the-art.
