SPAIN
ADAPTATION PERIOD IN KINDERGARTEN-
SPANISH TEAM
-We start in June with a meeting: the families of the children who will enter the 3-year-old classes come to the school and are received by the teachers who will have these groups. The counselor and the director also participate.
In this meeting, the evolutionary characteristics of these students are discussed, the general objectives that we are going to work on and the necessary collaboration between families and teachers to achieve a good adaptation of children to the school environment. We go through the school spaces together, we explain the route of entrances and exits...
-In September, before classes begin, another meeting is held in the classrooms with the teacher who will be in charge of each group. Here the rules of operation, the necessary materials for the course and the work methodology are specified. Data sheets about the students are collected and personal details that each family considers important to take into account at school are dealt with.
-In the days before the beginning of the course, families are invited to come with their children to their class, with their teacher, and stay there for some time (little). They know the space, the other children who will be their classmates and their teacher, with the security of being accompanied by their family.
-On the first day of the official course, a reduced schedule is contemplated for the 3-year-old level. Each group is divided and half of the students attend the center for 2 hours and the other half in another 2-hour shift. Families are also offered, in agreement with the tutor, a reduced schedule that will be extended little by little until reaching the full day. Each case is considered and admission to school is adapted.
-During the month of September, in each classroom of 3 years, a teacher is incorporated in addition to the tutor to collaborate in the process of adaptation of the students.
-The moments of recess are held at a different time during this period, until the 3-year-old children know the spaces of the school and fell safe in it.
-In the month of October, the adaptation period ends and the new groups join the general march of the infant cycle.
Throughout the first trimester, the infant support teacher is dedicated to collaborating in the 3-year-old classes.
EVALUATION IN KINDERGARTEN-SPANISH TEAM
Assessment in Early Childhood Education is an essential curricular element in the learning process.
Observation is the basic procedure we use. One of the instruments we use is rating scales. These are made up of a list where all the student's learning is collected, in what phase of acquisition it is and how its evolution is staggered during the course. Habits and attitudes are also collected: behavior in the classroom, ability to make an effort, social relations...
The personal history of the child that we elaborated through an initial interview with the families also helps us a lot.
This information will be very useful to support the child's learning, especially if they show difficulties or specific needs for educational support.
Assessment in kindergarten uses these qualifications:
EXC; Excellent
BUE; Good
ADE; Appropriate
REG; Regular
WHEN DO WE EVALUATE?
• The initial evaluation is necessary at the beginning of any cycle and level in order to assess the children’s knowledge through interviews with the families and the information provided by the previous center if they have been in school. This evaluation will include, if necessary, medical, psychological, pedagogical and social reports that are relevant to the child's learning process.
• During the course we make three Evaluation Records. The teacher’s team meets to share and comment on the results at the end of each trimester.
• Also a record in which the teacher can evaluate their own educational practice.
After every assessment meeting, we inform the families and work together to improve the learning process.
