I have a favorite Old Testament verse that many will probably find odd: "Man that is born of woman is of a few days full of trouble. Job 14:1 The reason it is my favorite is because it helps to explain why there is so much suffering in my life and in the world. It can be my favorite bible verse because of my favorite New Testament verse: " In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33 Be certain that troubles will continue. But we can be more certain that when we put our trust in the Lord Jesus, we are able to overcome the troubles and trials and tribulations of this life.

Jesus came to serve-to show us how to serve
Last January began inauspiciously. There were very few events of real note. One thing of note was precipitated by an afternoon listening to one of my favorite radio programs on my way home from work. WGTS is a Christian radio station that I enjoy. It is a listener supported not for profit radio station. I especially like what their call letters stand for. WGTS -Washington's Gateway To Service. As I was driving home one of the announcers brought up the subject of setting a word for the year. The idea is that you consider a character-building word to ponder for the entire year. Unfortunately, 3 weeks after deciding on a character-building word I could not be certain if I had decided on servant or service. So, I alternately thought on and pondered elements of both words.
From now on I will have to write it down to be sure that I recall what word I am supposed to meditate on. I have to repeat either service or servant since I did not do either of them justice.
Servant
I have decided to focus on Servant for the 2025 year. So I decided to also begin the first message/essay of 2025 about the word servant. My focus will be on the biblical meaning of the word.
I like what the Biblestudytools.com offers in an explanation from Walter M. Dunnett.
[Dr. Walter M. Dunnett served as Assistant Rector at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn, IL. Born in Tayport, Scotland, Fr. Dunnett received his B.A., M.A., M.Div. from Wheaton College, S.T.M. from Luther Northwestern Seminary, D.W.S. from the Institute for Worship Studies and his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. He also served as a college professor in Bible and New Testament Greek for 40 years. He was ordained as Priest in the Episcopal Church in 1992 and served as Priest Associate at Church of the Messiah in Minnesota (1992-1997) and has been at St Mark’s since 1998. Dr. Dunnett has written several books on the Old and New Testament along with The Interpretation of Holy Scripture: Issues, Principles, Models: An Introduction to Hermeneutics.]
Dunnet notes: “In the New Testament, doulos [dou'lo"] is frequently used to designate a master's slave (one bound to him), but also a follower of Christ (a "bondslave" of Christ). The term points to a relation of absolute dependence, in which the master and the servant stand on opposite sides, the former having a full claim, the latter having a full commitment. The servant can exercise no will or initiative on his or her own.
Doulos [dou'lo"] is applied to several Old Testament worthies, including Moses (Rev 15:3) and the prophets (Rev 10:7). Paul (Titus 1:1) and James (1:1) both refer to themselves as servants of God; Paul also calls himself the "servant of Christ" (Rom 1:1; Php 1:1).”
For many the idea of being bound to any other is objectionable at least. Therefore, the struggle to join oneself to Christ as a servant is an extremely difficult choice to make. It requires a true transformation. As a black man the idea of calling anyone master was so deeply engrained in me as a sign of weakness and inferiority. I always experienced a moment of hesitation whenever confronted with the concept that I was to renounce all rights and choose to be a servant of Christ. My natural environment made it impossible for me to set aside the historical context of slavery. I had very little concern for proclaiming myself a follower of Christ, or even a child of God, that was easy. But something within me caused me to stumble over the idea of being a servant, especially as Paul puts it a bond servant of Christ. As I stated it required a true transformation in my understanding. I had to come to the realization I was not deserving of the title of child of God. Even my best efforts did not come near to making me worthy to be a child of God. My heart itself was prone to be moved with pride for any good that I would do. As though it was my abilities that brought about the good. I am not sure of when it became clear to me that nothing I could ever do would be good enough, to be as righteous as Christ Jesus. But I am sure that many of the men and women that God put in my life helped me to see how far short I was of being right enough, good enough to be a child of God. What then can I aspire to? If I can never attain to the place of a child of God what is my relationship to the God of the universe? I am so grateful to the Lord of Grace for impressing upon me the message of grace and salvation. I grew up in the church hearing the scriptures being preached. But never hearing the message of salvation. Once the message became clear (1971-72) that all of my righteousness was like filthy rags in the sight of the Lord, I had to reevaluate how I viewed myself before God.
I realized that I needed the transformation to take place in my life. I needed the focus to no longer be on me and my abilities. I had to recognize that the only way that I would be a child of God is through joining myself to Christ Jesus. ‘Jesus forgive my sins and make me a child of God’, was my prayer. It became necessary for me to change how I viewed God himself. He is omnipotent, all power comes from him. He is omnipresent, he is present everywhere. Wherever I go he sees me. Whatever I do he sees me. I was in need of changes to my heart, mind and soul in order to be the child of God that I desired to be. I desperately wanted to please God: to honor him. I wanted to live a life that God would be pleased to call me his own. That was the transformation that was required. That is when the idea of being his servant no longer had a sting to it. Even today as I write this, I know that in me there is not enough good and rightness to make me worthy of being called his child. But I also know that by serving him, loving him, committing all that I am to pleasing him, one day I will hear him say well done my good and faithful servant. What joy that will be. And it is the thought of that great day of rejoicing that inspires me to daily look to my Father and my God for guidance about how I can honor him.
In my daily devotions I recognize that I am his servant: one who has full commitment; one who has absolute dependence upon my heavenly Father. The servant can exercise no will or initiative on his or her own. I have seen the effects of my own initiatives. Too often they have not ended well. But when the Spirit of the living God is directing the initiatives the end results are always full of eternal reward and blessing.
I do not know what you aspire to in this life. But I wholeheartedly invite you to know the love and blessing of being a servant/child of God.

Father, I thank you for the timelessness of your Word and your Promises. I pray you will use these words to encourage your children as they grow in their relationship with you. I pray that you will work in the heart of every person who does not know you as Lord to bring them to yourself, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
