I have a favorite Old Testament verse that many will probably find odd: "Man that is born of woman is of a few days full of trouble. Job 14:1 The reason it is my favorite is because it helps to explain why there is so much suffering in my life and in the world. It can be my favorite bible verse because of my favorite New Testament verse: " In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33 Be certain that troubles will continue. But we can be more certain that when we put our trust in the Lord Jesus, we are able to overcome the troubles and trials and tribulations of this life.

A Whale of A Preacher
A Preacher came to town this week. No one knows exactly when he arrived. He did not come by ship as many newcomers to our region come. He did not travel with many of the large groups that pass through. He just seemed to appear from out of the mist, from nowhere. His entrance into our city was strange and his message was even more strange. Stranger still is that the authorities did nothing to restrain, redirect, or regulate his disturbance of the peace of our city. The preacher was not like the many religious men we are familiar with. He was not canvasing for donations. He was not offering miraculous cures for a price. He was not attempting to establish a new religious order. He was not calling for anyone to join him. Nevertheless, his words were startling to any who had heard him. An eyewitness said, “when he spoke it was like he was speaking directly to me” Another person reported “it was like he knew things about me” Many of the business owners are fearful that the preacher will cause much of their clientele to drop their patronage. In an exclusive interview one of our largest investment leaders stated, “I fear the worse if this man continues unrestrained.” Along the coastline many of the citizens who make their living from the sea find the preacher a bit entertaining. One of our well-known fishermen who requests to remain anonymous says, “I can’t see anything wrong with what he is doing. Truly, I think he is a whale of a preacher.” Not all citizens appear as generous toward the “preacher”.
A prominent leader of the city who also has requested that her name not be used was irate with the decline in her district since the preacher has arrived. In fact, she has begun a petition to have the authorities put an end to the preacher’s activities. Frankly this may not be as easy as some think it should be. The preacher has not done much other than preach his message to whoever will stop and listen. He has not attempted to solicit donations or financial commitments. He has not laid any groundwork for a new place of worship. It is hard to point to anything that he has done besides preach. But this man has indeed preached. The words that he has loudly proclaimed to any who will stop, and listen has had great impact. Take for example one of the local scholars who is well acquainted with traditional religious beliefs that are represented in our region. He is convinced that the preacher has a message that citizens ought to be more attentive to. He cites a legendary story of the destruction of the twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah as a result of the anger of a powerful God of that region.
It is chilling to consider the possibility of such an event occurring in our own city. But this is what the preacher is saying. The message of the preacher is that God is angry with the way we have been living. According to the preacher we have only one choice. We have to turn from what he calls our ungodly behavior and turn in obedience to his words and look to his God for forgiveness. Repent! He says, Repent, before God comes and visits us with great retribution and destruction. From the highest government officials to the lowliest vagrant on the streets everyone everywhere is wondering Who is this preacher? Where does he come from? Did his God send him to warn us? And most importantly what if his message is true? In an exclusive interview with an official from our government we will hear an important message from the government regarding the preacher’s message.
I wrote this narrative in 2015 as part of a series of articles and narratives to encourage us to be sensitive to God’s call of obedience and commitment to his great commission to go out and make disciples.
This narrative is a parody of the ministry of Jonah the reluctant prophet of God. You can read Jonah’s story in the Old Testament the Book of Jonah. God sent Jonah to preach to the people of Nineveh. Because Nineveh was such an ancient and fierce enemy of Israel and others Jonah did not want to go. He knew that if the people repented God would forgive their sins. He did not want to be a part of that. He wanted to see the destruction of that great city.
There are two issues that Jonah should have reflected upon before attempting to thwart God’s plans.
1. What God purposes can not be altered by man’s unbelief, unwillingness, or disruptive actions. The scriptures say, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Numbers 23:19
2. God is sovereign, he is the very source of all power. I like how the Psalmist expresses it so simply, “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.”
Years ago, there was a cool phrase that I believe was part of a song, your arms are too short to box with God: Just a reminder of Who we have to deal with. We can spend our lifetime denying there is a God, but when the end comes, and we leave this life we will stand before the great God almighty who will open the book of our lives and from that book, he will judge us. The scriptures say, “it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
This narrative of Jonah and the city of Nineveh is very timely. As we are watching God moving in the lives of thousands of students on college campuses across our nation, I am reminded that God still visits with grace and mercy for any who will come to him in sincerity of heart to repent and cry out to him for his grace and forgiveness.
Imagine if God would send a messenger into your community to preach his word and call you to repentance what would your response be?
Now that you have read this narrative what is your response?

Your Christian life may be the only Gospel they will know
As the wind blows we cannot see where it goes, so is the working of the Spirit of the Living God
Father, I thank you for the timelessness of your Word and your Promises. I pray you will use these words to encourage your children as they grow in their relationship with you. I pray that you will work in the heart of every person who does not know you as Lord to bring them to yourself, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

“Belief turned into Conviction”.
I begin the message with a definition of Integrity. There are a number of definitions for integrity that run similar to this one. I have chosen this definition because of the analogy.
The word integrity evolved from the Latin adjective integer, meaning whole or complete. It is defined as 'an undivided or unbroken completeness', or 'a state of being complete or whole'. When used to describe a person, it refers to the concept of living by one's values and principle. …Living with integrity means being true and authentic to our code of beliefs or worldview. It means that others can rely on us to act consistently and honestly, in accordance with this code.

I am reminded that Jesus, in recognition of Nathaniel's integrity, referred to him as , "a man in whom there is no guile." John 1:47 KJV
A person of integrity is not duplicitous. They do not say one thing and mean another. Their yes is yes, and their no is no. Deception is not in them.

Pastor Chuck Swindoll is a preacher who has been a blessing to my heart since I became a believer. I enjoy his very down to earth way of bringing the scriptures alive. I really like this quote from a message preached by Chuck Swindoll:
“Believing important truths is valuable, standing on them in tough times is invaluable; that’s when mere beliefs turn into convictions.” (Nov.2021)
How do beliefs turn into convictions?
I believe belief turns into conviction in the same way that Faith grows. We experience testing of our beliefs and God brings us through with a greater faith. The more we are tried the greater our faith grows, the stronger our conviction becomes that God is more than able to deliver what he promises.
Our congregation spent several weeks going through the book of Hosea verse by verse. it was this study that probably prompted the thoughts regarding belief turning into conviction. Hosea's prophecy uses two imageries to describe God's relationship with the Israelites. He used the imagery of a husband and wife, specifically an adulterous, and unfaithful wife. He also used the imagery of a father and son. Both were designed to create in the mind of the reader specific emotions, thoughts, and responses. We discussed the imagery and recognized the deep sense of betrayal, exasperation, anger, and frustration brought about because of Israel’s continuous rejection of God and his blessings. At one point in his narrative God uses Hosea's lament to express his anger and exasperation, "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them. Hosea 11:1-4 NIV
How then does this understanding and this knowledge help us as believers in 2022?
Hosea's message to us today is learn a lesson from Israel. When God calls do not go away from him. When God reaches out to take you by the hand don't pull away. Our devotion ought to be to the one true God who gave his life for our salvation: That we might become the sons and daughters of God and not strangers. Our sacrifices are to be to God and to God's glory.
Hosea called the children of God to return to him with sincere hearts not with mere words. Hosea 12: 6 "But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always."
The problem for Israel was they were not committed to loving the God who created them. They were too much in love with the things of the world and the gods they had created.
Israel was, in the words of our definition, being duplicitous. We will face many temptations to be drawn away from our walk of faith. But if we with singleness of heart and mind purpose in our heart that we will hold fast to his promises he will do what he promises us.
Just as surely as the destruction of Israel came, God's promises to keep us who keep our minds stayed on him will also be fulfilled.
The more we experience the grace of God; the help of Almighty God the stronger our faith becomes; the stronger our convictions. Belief turns into conviction through the trying of our faith, through the experiences of adversity and challenge to what we believe.
Let me encourage you in the words of the scriptures:
"Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)" Hebrews 10:23
Allow God himself turn your belief into Conviction.
