Roll & Reads reinforce direct phonics instruction
I take a balanced approach to phonics instruction, combining direct, systematic teaching with opportunities to apply skills during reading lessons. I have experience using Benchmark Reading, Heggerty, and UFLI Foundations, adapting instruction to support diverse learners.
To reinforce learning, I incorporate decodable texts, engaging games and activities, and encourage home practice to strengthen school-to-home connections. My goal is to build confident, enthusiastic readers through consistent practice, joyful learning, and strong foundational literacy skills.
Writing is my favorite subject to teach, and I love integrating it across the curriculum. Students build narrative, informative, and opinion writing skills through daily prompts and cross-curricular projects tied to science, social studies, math, and our garden time—where they observe, reflect, and write about what they see. I view writing as a social activity, giving students regular opportunities to share their work, offer feedback, and revise with peers.
Reading is equally central in our classroom, supported by a diverse library, daily read-alouds, book clubs, and independent reading. We focus on genre study and deep comprehension, using tools like graphic organizers and Venn diagrams to connect reading with content areas. I strive to create space for students to read and write about what excites them.
