Strong communication with families is essential to building trust and fostering student success. I prioritize early and consistent communication, starting the year with a family survey to learn about each child’s background, parent communication preferences, and availability for involvement. I use platforms like ClassDojo to share class updates, celebrate student learning through photos and weekly newsletters, and keep families informed in real-time—in both English and Spanish.
I believe communication should meet families where they are. Whether through calls, texts, emails, or app updates, I adapt to each family's preferred method of connection. I also maintain an open-door policy for questions, concerns, or celebrations, reinforcing that we are partners in their child’s learning journey.
I invite families to participate in the classroom in ways that are flexible, meaningful, and culturally inclusive. At the start of the year, I gather parent preferences and strengths through a survey to tailor opportunities for involvement.
Families are encouraged to share their traditions, including decorating the classroom for cultural holidays, leading simple crafts, or sharing stories, recipes, or music. These contributions enrich our learning and celebrate student identities.
I also work with families to set shared academic goals, fostering strong home-school partnerships and supporting student growth through consistent collaboration.
Once a month, I host Community Fun Fridays—a special classroom event where students and their families are invited to participate in arts and crafts, games, and collaborative activities. These gatherings are designed to strengthen our classroom community by creating space for families to connect with one another and engage in joyful, hands-on experiences alongside their children.
In addition to building relationships among families, these events offer an opportunity for parents to explore the classroom environment, view student work, and celebrate their child’s learning in an informal, welcoming setting. Community Fun Fridays make school feel like a shared space, reinforcing the message that families are valued, active members of our learning community.
