After you submit your application, it is reviewed by the Work Exchange Coordinators. If your application is approved, you will be invited to a phase of the event (pre-event, mid-event, or post-event).
To confirm your participation, you will need to pay the Work Exchange Deposit. By paying the deposit, you are, in essence, paying the full price of a ticket ($400 for Central Americans and $700 for International). Once you complete the work requirement, your Deposit is refunded*.
Central Americans will receive a refund of $380 (minus payment processor fees). Internationals will be refunded $620 (minus payment processor fees). Therefore, roughly $100 of the Deposit is retained for Internationals.
The deadline to confirm your participation is January 15th.
Each year, our work exchange program costs around $25,000 USD to operate, not including meals. This covers all the behind-the-scenes systems, coordination, and on-site support that make the Work Exchange program possible. The impact fee helps us recover these costs—we don’t profit from it.
In previous years, the international impact fee was $100 USD, but this year we’ve lowered it to $80 USD so most work exchangers will still pay close to $100 in total once fees are passed along. Because our Stripe account is based in the United States, payments from outside the U.S. incur an additional 1.5% international transaction fee, which makes participation slightly more expensive for non-U.S. work exchangers. However, work exchangers pay a smaller $400 USD deposit and are only char
To make the program more accessible, we’ve added Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options like Klarna, which allow volunteers to spread payments over time. While this helps reduce upfront costs, BNPL services charge around 6% in merchant fees and additional interest depending on the repayment timeline, meaning the total paid will be higher than a one-time payment. Unfortunately, BNPL isn’t yet available in every country, particularly across Latin America. By balancing these factors, we’re able to keep the program sustainable while making participation possible for as many people as we can.
In an effort to make it easier to confirm your participation, we’ve introduced Buy Now, Pay Later options that let you split your deposit into smaller installments over time. This helps lower the upfront cost and makes the program more accessible for more people.
Please note that it’s cheaper to pay in full all at once, as payment plans include fees and interest that decrease the total amount you're refunded. However, depending on when you choose to pay with a plan, you may end up paying less before receiving your refund, even if your total refund is smaller in the end. All fees and interest charged by payment or financing services are non-refundable.
Note: If you select a payment plan that spans beyond the event dates, once you complete the work requirement, we will refund your order minus Impact Fee, merchant fees and any interest left to pay.
*If you choose to pay with Klarna's BNPL payment plan option, please note that any plan, including its terms, fees, interest, or payment obligations, is exclusively between you and Klarna. Shift Happens does not control or manage this agreement, and any issues or inquiries that arise must be addressed directly with Klarna.*
If BNPL or Klarna is offered, it will show up at checkout. Not all people or countries will qualify.

Sadly, no. We are unable to accommodate deposit waiving. Emails requesting a deposit waiver may not receive a response.
A middle class salary in Costa Rica is ~$750/month-- far less than the earning potential of us in the Global North. Depósitos con Descuentos is a strategy to encourage greater participation from our Costa Rican hosts, as well as other Latin Americans.
