Yes, all meals served at the staff commissary are primarily vegan. Occasionally the catering team will supplement vegan meals with animal products for the omnivores on staff. We recommend those with dietary restrictions bring food to supplement the meals served at staff commissary.
YES! Our Village is home to a wide array of wonderful vendors with a focus on locally sourced and organically grown ingredients. In addition, our very own Envision Cafe Serves jungle gourmet meals and Envision Coffee. The Villages Witches Elixir Bar also serves great beverages and treats.
Individuals are welcome to make food at camp, however, no communal kitchen structures can be built in the Work Exchange Campground because it would create a health/hygiene and fire hazard, and, with the program expanding, designating such a space would displace campsites. Work Exchangers are welcome to discuss cooking with one another in the Facebook group or Whatsapp chat.
It's really difficult to store food in the jungle. Be prepared with air tight containers, even for fruit, otherwise there will be an ant infestation. Plus, things do tend to turn quickly in the heat and humidity.
The nearest grocery store is in Uvita, a five minute drive from the festival grounds. The selection is limited, especially for those with dietary restrictions. During the event, many staples run out, so plan ahead and purchase any supplemental food a few days prior to the event or better yet in San José. Staples such as nut butter are much more expensive in Costa Rica than countries in the Global North.
