Week 11

We are not meeting in class as usual today. Instead, we are having conference meetings in my office (FC 113) today and Tuesday. We will have class as usual this week, Wednesday and Friday.

To prepare for your meeting with me, come with two questions in mind. It can be related to your work in class, research project, etc.

If for any reason you cannot make your meeting, email me ASAP. It is rude to not contact someone if you can't make a meeting. I don't want to be waiting around for someone to show up if they are not coming. So let's not do that!

Announcements

• This Friday, (April 5) is the last day to drop.
• Remember to check the rubric I attached to your grade in Blackboard so you will know how to improve on your writing.
• Whether or not you were satisfied with your midterm grades, remember, the final grade will be weighed a lot heavier (70% of your grade) so the work you are producing now can either bring your grade up (if you are improving) or bring your grade down (if you are slacking off). A “B” could turn into a “C” or worse if you stop coming to class, stop participating, stop doing the assignments, etc. Similarly, a high “C” can possibly become an “A” if you show immense improvement in all aspects of the class.

Warm up:

Evaluate the following quote and talk about what it means:

• "Writing is both relational and responsive, always in some way part of an ongoing conversation with others. This characteristic of writing is captured in what is referred to as the classic rhetorical triangle, which has at each of its points a key element in the creation and interpretation of meaning: writer, (speaker, rhetor), audience (receiver, listener, reader), and text (message), all dynamically related in a particular context" (p.20).
• How does this relate to The Basic Elements of the Communication Process?

Discussion

• What does this reading mean that "writers [need] to fictionalize their audiences and, in turn, for audiences to fictionalize themselves - that is, to adopt the role set out for them by the writer" (p.20).
• "Writers whose works have "gone viral" on the web know well what it means to create an audience that has been unintended and indeed unimagined" (p.21).
• "...the advent of digital and online literacies has blurred the boundaries between writer and audience significantly: the points of the once-stable rhetorical triangle seem to be twirling and shifting and shading into one another. When consumers of information can, quite suddenly, become producers as well, then it's hard to tell who is the writer, who is the audience" (p.21).

For Friday...

Be prepared to discuss 2.1 "Writing Represents the World, Events, Ideas, and Feelings." We will also go over how to improve on your Research Journals.

Warm up

Take 5-10 minutes to write down what you found significant about this CT (2.1). Write down a quote or two and explain why they are significant to you.

Discussion

• "Writers often have great ambitions about the effects and power of what they write and their ability to capture the truth of realities or conjure imagined realities, but they are constantly caught up short by what they can bring into shared reality through words" (p.38).

Takeaway for today---

Words are powerful and influential and we must choose them wisely.

Activity:

• Look at these RJ examples and let's discuss what is effective and what is not effective.
• After this discussion, have a classmate look at your last RJ and discuss whether or not yours is doing what works.

Homework for next week...
