What do potatoes teach you?
We hold up other plants with reverence, but the humble potato often misses out. I can see why - compared to a grand oak tree, or grapes that make wine, or a sensuous strawberry, the potato is just a dusty, starchy and often wrinkly knob in the dark part of the cupboard. You’ll never see a hot babe licking a potato on a music clip
But all plants have wisdom, as my quirky friend taught me. And the potato has many things to teach. Now when I see its leaves sprouting uninvited in the garden, I let them grow. What a generous plant to keep on giving year after year when I’m not sure how it really got into that veggie patch anyway
When I’m sad or overwhelmed, baked potatoes are my comfort food. We can survive and be perfectly healthy on just potatoes and dairy. And they teach us patience - one harvest can last for months.
So let’s spare a thought for this little friend and it’s teachings. What has the potato taught you lately?
