Mulberry School for Girls

Mulberry School for Girls is a secondary school and sixth form in Shadwell East London.

At KS3, pupils study D&T Textiles where they develop an understanding of the design process, fabrics and fibres, and begin to explore a range of textiles skills and techniques. At KS4, pupils can choose to continue their Textiles studies through a GCSE Art and Design based course. Pupils have the opportunity of exploring a range of materials and techniques, both traditional and modern.

At the start of the course, pupils visit the ‘Knitting and Stitching Show’ and are introduced to a diverse range of artists, designers and makers working in the field of Textiles. In the autumn and spring term of Year 10, pupils explore the theme of ‘Natural Forms’ through batik, silk painting, marbling, applique, needle felting and embroidery. In the summer term, pupils select a sub-theme,  which this year have included Flowers, Underwater and Insects. Pupils have the opportunity of visiting The Horniman Museum to explore primary research within the museum’s butterfly house, aquarium and gardens to develop and explore their own ideas.

Images of pupils' work in the exhibition this year range from research pages and samples to more developed final pieces.
