The School of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University offers courses across a broad range of subject areas: art (encompassing fine art, photography, English, creative writing, theatre and performance practice), architecture (including spatial planning and urban design) and design, which includes 3D design (fashion, textiles, furniture, product and jewellery), interiors and visual communication.
Learning through practice, playing with process and working with clients; students at the school gain real-world experience in both individual and collaborative projects, engaging with professionals, communities and companies. There is a strong emphasis in our studios on socially engaged architecture, art and design applied to both local and global contexts. The many specialist facilities you could find yourself using include wood, metal and plastic workshops, darkrooms and digital manufacturing technology.
Architecture apprenticeship information
This course is designed to enable architecture practices to retain talented apprentices, so they may continue to work four days a week in the office whilst studying our Architecture (RIBA 2) - MArch and Examination in Professional Practice (RIBA 3) - PG Cert courses on a part-time basis. The King’s Foundation offers a diverse range of innovative and inspiring education and training programmes for all ages and backgrounds, from traditional arts and heritage craft skills, to architecture and design, science, engineering, horticulture, wellbeing and hospitality. Programmes take place within and beyond the charity’s sites, both nationally and internationally. THE King’S FOUNDATION DIPLOMA YEAR. A NEW COURSE IN FINE AND APPLIED ART
The King's Foundation Diploma year is a dynamic skills-based course with five days’ teaching per week. The small cohort’s size of up to 60 students allows for targeted one-to-one teaching in a supportive and creative environment. Located at Trinity Buoy Wharf, the programme benefits from its creative and inspiring neighbours in its Thames-side location.
The programme is unique in its focus on the interplay between traditional skills, innovation and creativity – all essential requirements for successful progression to Higher Education and careers in the creative industries.
The broad curriculum is especially suited to progression onto Visual Arts courses such as Fine Art and Applied Arts, Animation and Illustration, Architecture, Textiles and Fashion, Photography and Film, Theatre and Set Design, Sculpture, Furniture Making and Design, Carving, Crafts and many more.
Students investigate a broad variety of Fine Art and Applied Art processes and concepts. Drawing is integral to the programme, with its ability to express and crystallise ideas.
FUTURE TEXTILES EDUCATION PROGRAMME IS AVAILABLE IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS AND LEVELS.
From introductory programmes for secondary school pupils through to internationally recognised training in luxury apparel manufacturers through our Modern Artisan partnership with Yoox Net a Porter.
ABOUT
Our Future Textile programme is designed to address a skills gap within the UK textile industry and encourage new entrants with relevant vocational skills. The programme is targeted at secondary school pupils alongside community groups and adults wishing to enter the industry.
Programmes range from one day workshops which encourage young people to develop an awareness of the industry, to in-depth training programmes producing garments for the luxury fashion market. Supporters of the programme include major retailers and brands such as Yoox Net a Porter, Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane. As well as having the opportunity to develop sewing skills, there are workshops in woven and knitted textiles and hand and machine embroidery.

The Slade offers two undergraduate programmes, the BA and the BFA in Fine Art; two Masters programmes, the MA and MFA in Fine Art; the MPhil/PhD in Fine Art, plus affiliate student and short course programmes. Entry requirements
Entry requirements
A levels – To get on to a related degree, you will usually need a minimum of two A levels. Entry requirements range from CDD to ABB, with providers most commonly asking for BBC. In addition, you normally require five GCSEs at grade C or above including maths and English. However, many courses do not have specific A level requirements:
Performing arts – English, performing arts, or another essay-based humanities subject is useful. Applicants taking a performance music course will often be expected to have achieved a minimum of grade 7 ABRSM (or equivalent) in their main instrument or voice.
Design, fine art, and photography – many courses require, or prefer, an art and design A level or Scottish Higher. It can also advantageous to have a foundation diploma in art and design.
Creative writing – English or a related A level or Scottish Higher is required for many courses.
