Previews, workshops, CPDs
Our aim as a network, is to provide opportunities for our students and artist teachers. We thrive on networking and liaising with partners and informing teachers about up and coming exhibitions, previews and CPDs.
As artist teachers, we continually refresh and update our practice through experimenting with techniques, processes and exploring new ideas.

Session 1 - Collage - Make and Remake
Collage as a medium is accessible, low cost, gives fast results and can be a really useful tool as a springboard for drawing, painting and sculpture. By working quickly in collage, it draws on transferable skills such as problem solving, troubleshooting, motor skills, as well as building confidence in decision making.
Make and Remake - Working with Collage - using this medium as a way of thinking and making:
Using magazines, newspaper and tape, we created a collage based on the idea of a portrait/identity
Using our off-cuts, we then re-used these to make a new portrait/identity
Using new collage materials, we made a new design with a 3-D element based on either a landscape or an interior
Finally, we drew/sketched our collage using pens/pencils

Session 2 - Collage - In this session we worked with automatic drawing and monoprinting
We gridded up our sketchbooks with tape creating 12 boxes. We then took a pencil for a walk crossing all boxes, we then took a biro pen for a walk. We then used a thicker black pen to fill in/create marks, making/patterns and shades. We had the option to add colour if we wished. As we worked on this, some started to notice faces, landscapes or just abstract compositions
Using printing inks on acetate, we created a series of prints exploring our automatic drawings as inspiration

Session 3 - Zines - In this session we worked with drawing and collage to make two zines.
We made a zine using cartridge paper
We then went outside and sketched on each side
We then created another larger zine inspired by our drawings using both collage and drawing
Barbican workshops
The conservatory hosts a range of workshops based on current exhibitions - a spectacular new site-specific commission by Indian sculptor Ranjani Shettar. Cloud songs on the horizon is the artist’s first major institutional show in Europe and features five new, large-scale, suspended sculptures across the entirety of the Conservatory space.
Shettar’s sculptures are each handcrafted by the artist and draw inspiration from the complexity of nature, using a range of materials including wood, stainless steel, muslin, lacquer and techniques that have been adapted from traditional Indian crafts.
On show Fri 12th April - Sun 5th May 2024 and as part of the commission, a series of workshops are available.
Workshops attended were:
Weaving using brutalist images of the Barbican Centre
Sewing using brutalist images of the Barbican Centre
Bow Arts preview and workshop
Bow Arts welcomed teachers from local schools to a Private View of Bring Your Light: Bow Arts x Chila Burman present the Bow Open 2023,
(Tue 21 November 2023, 17:45 - 19:30)
We viewed the show in an informal atmosphere, and met with the Learning team. This event was a great opportunity for all to find out more about Bow Arts and see examples of recent projects and discuss how they can support visual arts provision in our schools. As part of the preview, there was a drop-in practical workshop using acetates, collaged tissue, coloured film and coloured pens. Final designs were explored by projecting images and experimenting with different coloured gels.

The Photographers' Gallery
Alongside pre-booked school visits that offer self-led visits to our exhibitions, we also hold free events for teachers and trainee teachers to come together to share professional practice.
Teachers’ Sessions and TeachMeets take place every season:
Teachers' Sessions currently focus on two themes – diversifying the curriculum and the environment. They aim to introduce photography practitioners and new approaches into the classroom.
TeachMeets are focused on the ideas and experiences of teachers. They include informal presentations and networking related to teacher-proposed themes. TeachMeets aim to share ideas, create dialogue and widen understanding of working with photography within the school environment.
We are always looking to programme new events with and for teachers. If you are interested in leading a session or would like to suggest a theme for the future, please email projects@tpg.org.uk
Freelands Foundation
Is a forum to explore the principles of teaching as artistic practice. Their ARTISTEACHER sessions is a regular discussion forum for art teachers and educators. Through the group, artist teachers explore the principles of teaching as artistic practice, share projects as well as working collaboratively to develop new ideas.
