Our school was built in 1885. This is the biggest school in the town and the most complex in the school district. More than a hundred people work here, of which 85-90 are teachers, and 855-865 pupils study in the three departments.
Our departments are:
an 8-year primary school (6-14 yrs)
an 8-year (10-18 yrs) secondary (grammar) school specialised in biology and IT
a 5-year secondary (14-19 yrs) (grammar) school with a preparatory English language year
a SEN primary school for mentally disabled pupils and a regional autism centre (6-14 yrs)
Our strengths or distinguishing features:
Art
We used to have a music class with special curriculum. Although it does no longer exist but the traditions and the expertise are still present at the school. We have temporary choirs: boys' choir, chamber choir, and some teachers and old students are members of the local mixed choir. Luckily, there are always one or two students, mainly girls, who sing as their hobby and they entertain us in all school events.
During their studies there are endless opportunities for our students to practice fine arts and one of our art teacher has exhibitions of her paintings and sculptures from time to time. Since it is possible to take Matura examination on Fine Art, there have always been a couple of students choosing this subject each year. Decorations of our school and the school events or ceremonies also praise the talent and work of all art teachers of the school.
Folk and modern dances are also present in our school. Lower primary classes have folk dance lessons and all age groups can be found in the afternoon classes of the B-Cool Dance modern dance team where some old students became instructors. Several students are members of the local Forrás Folkensemble.
Heritage Eco-School
The title recognizes institutions which deal with sustainability in an institutional-wide way, thus contributing to the fact that sustainability and its principles should become a natural part of everyday life for future generations. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that more and more young people become committed to protecting the environment and health. Those schools or colleges in which sustainability education pervades daily practice in a thoughtful and systematic way, become members of the Eco-School Network (Ökoiskola Hálózat) so that they can function even more effectively. The wider the institutions become the part of the network, the more it helps to achieve common goals. Having awarded the Eco-School title for several years in the last seven years we received the Heritage Eco-School qualification.
English language preparatory year
A unique opportunity in Hungary for primary school leavers to apply for a pre-secondary year called "language preparatory year" during which they have 15-18 language classes of the chosen foreign language, in our school, English. Each secondary school offering such course has its own curriculum for this year. In our school we combined the English language studies in 16 with IT studies in 5 lessons a week. Most pupils take 5-7 ICDL exams during the year. As for English, there is a pre-intermediate and an intermediate group at the beginning and the aim is to achieve advanced level of English for all students by the end of their secondary studies in English and intermediate level in another foreign language out of German, French or Italian. In the 4 years of secondary education the number of English classes decrease while students have more lessons in their second foreign language: English 16-5-4-(2), second foreign language 5-5-6-6. All students take their Matura exams and language exams at level 11, that is why they normally do not have English lessons in their final year.
Drama
Drama games for breaking the ice, physical warm-ups, group dynamics and encouraging creativity are part of everyday teaching in all subjects. Above that there are several opportunities to take up drama as extracurricular activity and make performances. There are two drama study groups, one for primary and one for secondary pupils. Drama in English is also included in the language preparatory year curriculum and students perform a play at the end of the school year.
