Alief ISD hosts an SAT School Day in the spring and allows juniors to take the SAT for free. SAT scores are used for college admissions and merit-based scholarships.

Khan Academy provides personalized SAT practice and allows students to identify which areas need improvement. Start by linking your College Board account to your Khan Academy account. Khan Academy will then create a personalized study guide based on your previous PSAT scores. To join 'Class of 2023,' enter this class code: HZDZBGZR. After joining, click your notifications and share your SAT activity with Mrs. Cantu.

Have you completed 6+ hours of official SAT Practice on Khan Academy? You could win $1,000 from College Board!

Schedule a meeting with your counselor, if you haven't met with them yet. This is a great opportunity to review your endorsements plan, class schedule, GPA and rank, and determine if you're academically ready for dual-credit or advanced placement classes (AP). Dual-credit and AP classes are a great way to challenge yourself academically and earn college & high school credits; this is a great way to get ahead and save money in college!

It's okay to be unsure of what major or career field you should pursue. Take time to explore different career fields to figure out which one you are most interested in pursuing and find the right match for you. Social media is a great resource as well such as YouTube/TikTok! Search "A day in the life of [insert career]" or #[insert career]. Once you have a major and career decided, now all you have to do is search for universities with the best (insert major choice) programs.

Research and build a list of ALL universities you're interested in attending. Factors to take into consideration include: campus life, housing, location, diversity & inclusion, admission requirements, and so on. To learn more about their programs and admissions, visit their college website. Due to COVID-19, virtual tours may be available on the college's website or YouTube.

Ready to prepare for college applications? Start by writing a rough draft of your college essay and asking a parent, friend or teacher to review it. After you have received feedback, write a final draft so you're ready to submit it when applications open! Have you completed both steps? Familiarize yourself with the college application process HERE.

The summer before your senior year, participate in one or two of the following: volunteer, find a part-time or full-time job, apply for a summer college program or a summer internship, shadow a professional in the field of your interest or set up a phone-call meeting with them to gain more information about that field. Be sure to keep track of all of your experience and build a resume!

A common deciding factor in a senior's college decision is financial aid. It's important to apply for scholarships as soon as possible so that you can decrease any possible college debt and focus on your studies during college. For scholarship updates from the College Access Team, check your Alief email and Alief ISD Scholarship spreadsheet.
