Engaging Languages in Intercultural Virtual Exchange
As the E-LIVE project concludes in December 2024, we reflect on its significant achievements and the impact it has made. Rooted in the dynamic needs of our digital, multicultural, and global society, E-LIVE was conceived as a bold response to the challenges that educators face today.
E-LIVE aimed to enhance the digital pedagogical competencies of language educators—both current and future—while fostering inclusive, intercultural communication and cooperation. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, we sought to empower educators to break down classroom walls, enrich language teaching, and create meaningful global connections among learners. At its core, E-LIVE embraced diversity as a strength, embedding it into every aspect of the project to promote tolerance, equality, and mutual respect.
1. Pedagogical innovation:
We transformed language teacher training by integrating intercultural virtual exchange (VE) projects as a central component of educational practice. Through experiential and reflective learning, we equipped 593 trainee teachers with digital literacy, pedagogical innovation skills, and intercultural competence, setting them up to lead change in their future classrooms.
2. Connecting classrooms across borders:
E-LIVE fostered collaboration between schools and teacher training institutions, empowering educators to design and implement VE projects. These exchanges enabled students from diverse cultural backgrounds to engage in meaningful dialogue, enriching their language learning experiences and promoting global citizenship.
3. Harnessing technology for engagement:
By incorporating Virtual Reality (VR), E-LIVE introduced innovative tools to language education. These technologies were piloted to explore .their potential for enhancing engagement, interaction, and learning outcomes in VE activities.
4. Addressing super-diversity and inclusion:
We embraced the diversity present not only in today’s classrooms but in the world as a catalyst for innovation. E-LIVE facilitated VE projects that celebrated cultural, linguistic, academic and social differences, ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, had access to meaningful and inclusive learning opportunities participating in VEs.
5. Creating educational resources accessible to all:
E-LIVE has developed an extensive suite of Open Educational Resources (OER), including:
21 interactive digital modules on digital literacy, intercultural learning, innovative language teaching and task development.
22 collaborative interaction tasks for trainee teachers participating in VEs.
109 engaging VE tasks in English, French, German, and Spanish for levels A1 to C1 for school students that can be adapted by teachers to meet their specific pedagogical needs.
16 case studies highlighting best practices in VE implementation.
6. Amplifying voices and building communities:
To humanise the project, we captured the experiences of educators and students through testimonials and best-practice stories. Additionally, E-LIVE has established a transnational network and community of practice for language educators, fostering ongoing collaboration and innovation through research initiatives.
7. Reaching far and wide:
Through webinars, tailored training, and public access to resources, E-LIVE has engaged over 200 stakeholders and accompanied 34 school teachers to adopt VE projects in their classrooms.
E-LIVE has not only transformed how languages are taught but has also set a new standard for inclusive, technology-enhanced education. The project aligns with the European Commission’s Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027), ensuring its outcomes will continue to impact language education for years to come.
As we look back, we acknowledge the importance of collaboration, innovation, and diversity in shaping the future of education. E-LIVE has demonstrated that with the right tools, support, and pedagogical vision, we can prepare educators and learners to thrive in an interconnected world.

We have used and tested several virtual environment systems and found that FrameVR is very suitable for education, it's very easy to use for teachers with less technical skills.
