Unit 3
Social Media Impact
Social Media Impact
Project Description
This project is meant to help me understand my social media habits while also looking at the bigger picture of how social media has shaped the world.
My survey results revealed that I am fairly reliant on social media, and I hadn't realized that until the survey. It highlighted the use of UK adults which is considerably lower than the US. I am someone who says, "I don't need social media," so I didn't think my usage was extreme, but seeing the results laid out made me see how often I turn to social media, esp. X, without really thinking about it. A lot of my scrolling is more habitual than intentional, which was eye-opening.
Interesting Social Media Statistic
I chose this statistic from Pew Research showing that 95% of teens use YouTube and 67% use TikTok because I was curious about how different generations use social media. It made me wonder what platforms younger people gravitate toward compared to adults, and how those habits shape the way each generation communicates with each other. Seeing the numbers helped me understand how early these patterns start and why certain apps feel like it's for younger people. It also made me think about how my own usage compares and how these patterns continue to evolve over time.
Social Media's Impact on Society
I think social media has changed the way people communicate, and not always for the better. It has made it easier to stay connected, but it has also created a lot of pressure to stay relevant. There is a need to be present but not in the moment, always performing, or comparing yourself to others. I think it's affecting our attention spans (mines included), relationships, and how we see ourselves. At the same time, social media can be a powerful tool for learning, sharing information, and organizing. So, I think the impact is complicated, there's a lot of good, but there's also a lot of things we need to be more aware of.
Lessons Learned
I learned that I should pay more attention to my social media use. My scrolling habits are shaped more by convenience and impulse than actual intention. I also learned how widespread social media use is and how much it shapes our daily lives. Completing this project should help me think more critically about how I use social media and how it affects me. Which is easier said than done!
