Application Problem Resources

What is an Application Problem?

Application problems are used in the Engage New York K-5 curriculum to review prior skills, apply prior skills in new context, or front load skills to be taught soon. This problem may or may not align directly with the Concept Development and Problem Set. This is a time to encourage critical thinking and discussion. If students need more exposure to these concepts, creating similar problems for more practice is encouraged. “I do,” “we do,” “you do together,” and brief “you do” experiences may all happen during this time.

The Application Problems address grade-level appropriate word problem types. Understanding word problem types can help both you and your students see patterns in the Application Problems and use models based on the type of problem.
