Question: "How high do we need to go in multiplying multi-digit multiplication for 5th grade?" The Utah Core in 5.NBT.5 specifies that students should fluently multiply multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. There is no guide for how high we should go.
Answer: In talking with the state office, currently approved SAGE questions include the following types of problems.
2 x 2 (two digits on the top and two digits on the bottom)
3 x 2 (three digits on the top and two digits on the bottom)
4 x 2
3 x 3
4 x 3
5 x 1
There is no need to practice with any problem with more digits than this.
Thank you Municipal Elementary for the great question!
