🌱 How to care for your skin during a time of change
Puberty is like a “storm of changes” – so many things are happening at once inside you. As your body grows, hormones kick in and affect your skin too.
🔸 It’s a natural stage, but sometimes it can feel confusing. You might get pimples, oily skin, redness, and all of these changes can influence how you feel about yourself.
💬 “Why do I have acne?”
💬 “Which cream is right for me?”
💬 “What can I do to not feel ashamed of my skin?”
This lesson will answer those questions and help you care for your skin with confidence, calm, and kindness.
During puberty, hormones called androgens make your skin’s sebaceous glands produce more sebum (natural oil). This can cause:
Clogged pores → blackheads or whiteheads
Inflammation → pimples or acne
Texture changes → oilier, more sensitive, or mixed skin
🔹 This is absolutely normal — over 80% of teens experience these changes.
🧑🧒🦱 Differences Between Girls and Boys in Skin Care
Hormones start to fluctuate with the first period, which can cause pimples, especially around the chin and forehead.
They may begin using makeup or scented products, which can clog pores if not age-appropriate.
Skin might become more sensitive before or during menstruation.
🧴 Recommendations:
Choose makeup labeled non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and always remove it at night.
Avoid strong perfumes or “shimmery/glittery” products if breakouts appear.
Sebaceous glands are very active – skin is usually oilier.
Starting to shave facial hair can irritate the skin and make acne worse.
Many boys skip skin care or just wash their face with water or body soap, which can dry out or inflame the skin.
🧴 Recommendations:
Use a gentle cleanser and light moisturizer daily.
If shaving: use soothing shaving gel and alcohol-free aftershave.
Wash your face twice a day, morning and night.
Use a gentle cleanser that suits your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, or combination).
Don’t use regular soap – it can dry out your skin and make acne worse.
Don’t rub your face with a towel – gently pat with a clean towel instead.
🧴 Examples:
✔️ CeraVe Foaming Cleanser
✔️ Bioderma Sébium
✔️ La Roche-Posay Effaclar
Helps balance pH and reduce redness.
Choose alcohol-free toners with soothing ingredients like niacinamide, thermal water, or green tea.
Even oily skin needs hydration!
Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer (won’t clog pores).
🧴 Recommendations:
✔️ Neutrogena Hydro Boost
✔️ The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors
✔️ CeraVe PM Moisturizing Lotion
Sun exposure can make acne worse and cause dark spots.
Use SPF 30 or higher, every day, even when it’s cloudy.
🧴 Examples:
✔️ La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50+
✔️ Bioderma Photoderm
✔️ Garnier Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced
❌ Adult products with retinol or high acid levels (like strong AHA/BHA)
❌ Harsh makeup removers or heavily scented wipes
❌ Physical exfoliators with big rough particles
❌ Popping pimples – can lead to infections and scars
✔️ Cleansers: CeraVe, Balea, Simple, Garnier
✔️ Gentle exfoliants:
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2%
Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid
✔️ Moisturizers: Neutrogena, Nivea Soft, Eucerin
✔️ Sunscreens: La Roche-Posay, Bioderma, Garnier
💡 Choose fragrance-free, alcohol-free products suitable for your age.
Hormones fluctuate due to puberty, menstruation, stress, diet, and sleep.
Skin might get oilier before your period or more sensitive after.
Don’t try new products during those times – be gentle and adjust your routine slowly.
Boys may have thicker, oilier skin → need deeper cleansing
Girls may be affected by periods, makeup, hair removal
Trans youth on hormone therapy may notice skin changes → a dermatologist can help with personalized care
✅ Everyone deserves skincare – regardless of gender or identity!
