One tool I really like for online assessment that can also be used to survey students is Socrative. This tool can be used purely for students to take assessments online with quizzes or interactive space races, or it can be used as a survey/check for understanding tool. It gives the educator the ability to pose questions at any time as long as students are already signed into the class. Educators can just ask a random check for understanding questions that are multiple choice, true/false, or even short answer. The question itself can be posed verbally, on the board in front of the class, or as a projection from a projector, and it does not have to be loaded into Socrative on their website at all.
While Socrative is a great tool to see students progress in class, it is also a great way to get them to be engaged or keep them engaged (Dervan, 2014). Students love to use technology and when they get to use it in class, they sometimes think they are getting away with something, but unbeknownst to them, they are learning. Using this can also help educators differentiate because it gives them the ability to do with technology what students typically used to have to do on paper. The ISTE student standards that fit with this tool are 1a, 1c, 2b, and 5c typically, others may depend on the use of the tool and the subject it is being used in.
