Even as advanced of a society we live in today, the only things commonly thought of as mobile devices are smartphones and cell phones. Even in my first few years of teaching, bring your own device (BYOD) was just beginning to be a common phrase because smartphones were just beginning to be something that students might be interested in and have with them. These can be a blessing and a curse when used in the classroom but they should never be shunned. Their use requires a special skill called classroom management. Granted, this can be one of the most difficult things for educators to do well, and it is ever-changing as technology changes. The key here is that students get to use technology no matter if their school is 1-to-1 with some device or if the school has class sets of devices. Another downside is that it requires students to have some of their own devices. This means that having a few devices in the classroom for those few that do not have their own may be necessary.
If you have not already, just reading the section on Web Forms/Online Assessment Tools can help you come up with ideas on a tool that can help you get started using mobile devices in the classroom. Mobile devices are things that students are comfortable using so it makes them feel better when they are doing their school work on such a familiar device. There are also a plethora of digital tools that can be used by teachers and students on their mobile devices just like those that have their devices supplied by the school, including Socrative as mentioned previously. No matter which of these tools is used, as long as they are used correctly, then they are all but guaranteed to increase student participation (Wash, 2014).
Another plus to using mobile devices is just not having to print anything on paper. However the majority of digital tools will let you print from them and then you can print a copy of the exam/quiz so that students with no technology can still accomplish the task. These tools require the largest number of ISTE standards because their use really is open to trying anything and everything to accomplish the task that the educator is requiring.
