Connect theory to practice

Why should we promote maker education and maker space? There are many underlying pedagogy and learning theories lay the foundation for maker education.

Work in groups, you will explore constructivism, constructionism, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and design-based learning. Each group should discover the following information about their topic

• What is it?
• Why learn about it?
• What’s an example of it (a real example from your group members)
• Find or create a picture that helps to illustrate your topic

What are the technologies in the maker space?

3D Printers (go to library's website to watch tutorial videos)

Step by step instructions:

• Go to Thingiverse to find a product that you'd like to make. Thingiverse is an open source website for people to share their 3D printing files.
• Once you picked the product, go to the tab thing files at the bottom of the product picture.
• Download the file(s) to your computer. Make sure your files are .STL. If your download is a compressed ZIP file, you can usually find STL files inside.
• Now, open this online tool called Tinkercad and sign up.
• Create a new design in Tinkercad and choose to import the STL files that you downloaded earlier.
• Click on your product and you'll see the size of the product. Scale it down to 50.8*50.8 mm (2*2 inches).
• You can customize the design and change the color. The makerspace only provides materials in red, yellow, and black colors.
• When you're finished designing, export your STL file and email it to makerspace@uga.edu. Include your name and class info (EDIT2000) in the email.

Laser Cutter with a working area of 24" x 18" x 12"

• Engraving files: .pdf, .jpg, .png have strong contrast- black and while photos are always better. You can turn your photos into Black and White by using Pixlr.
  • Import the picture into Pixlr: File – open image
  • Turn the picture into black and white: Adjustment - Desaturate
  • Increase the contrast: Adjustment – Brightness & Contrast
• Make detailer more defined and sharper: Filter – Unsharp Mask
• Save your photo as jpeg or png and put it into your flash drive.

Virtual Reality (HTC Vive and Oculus Rift) I highly recommend you to check it out if you've never tried a virtual reality goggle before.

What do you need to do @ maker space?

• Go to the maker space, pick one technology to learn.
• Design something and use the technology to build it.
• Take pictures while you are there to show your making procedure. You need at least two pictures. Post them on your Maker Space Page.

Write a reflection post after your visit

In your reflection, think about following questions (each question should have its own paragraph):

• What was your experience in the Maker space?
• What product did you make?
• What did you learn?
• Articulate an example of how can we incorporate Maker space in K-12 or higher education.

The total point of your reflection is 100 points. Each question worth 25 points.

Maker Faire

Once you have your product finished, be ready to present it and answer following questions from your audience:

• What is it?
• Why you make it?
• What’s the process of making it?
• What would you change if you have another chance?

The total point of your maker space product is 100 points. This project worth 10% of your final grade.
