JUNIOR JAZZ

Here’s a look at an average year-in-the-life for a Junior Jazz Band student at Eckstein Middle School.

Students who want exposure to jazz music have the opportunity to play in the after-school jazz band program--Junior Jazz. (Note: all band students may play in this group). This group meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:30 in the main Band Room. They add to their musical knowledge and experience by playing a variety of jazz music selections. As the year progresses, students are encouraged, but not required, to play solo or improvise pieces during class. After a year of Junior Jazz, many are ready for the next step up to Jazz Band A or, depending on experience, attitude and skill, possibly Jazz Band B.

Junior Jazz Band musicians are expected to practice their jazz scales and jazz music selections at home.

Junior Jazz Band plays in three evening jazz events during the year, including the popular "Swing Dance" held in Spring. All of these jazz events are held in the auditorium at Eckstein Middle School in the evening on a school night. There are no fees or travel costs associated with these concerts other than the required band attire for all musicians. There may be additional gigs throughout the year.

Families are encouraged to become involved in the Eckstein band program by supporting their student’s activities through positive reinforcement, volunteering for band activities, and helping with fundraising activities as their schedules allow.
