August 2026 Goodbye to Chien and Shin-Hua
I never expected to say goodbye so many times in our very first year. I probably need another glass wall for people to sign soon. We have a grand farewell with Phoebe's lab for all summer interns.
Chien, our self-proclaimed "senior intern," decided to join the lab even before our doors officially opened. He helped the lab established and performed our very first molecular cloning and ran the lab’s inaugural yeast experiment. While he eventually realized his research interests lie elsewhere, he brought so much fun and energy to the group. And I just noticed that he weared a "busy doing nothing" short in his last day in the lab. We'll miss him dearly, and I hope he visits and keeps stealing our lab food collection often—at the very least until he returns the lab laptop.
Shin-Hua, our summer intern, practically swept every first-place award across the internship competitions (with only a modest amount of my shameless mentorship bias). In these two months, she has never hesitated to step outside her comfort zone—tackling everything from computational modeling and fly genetics to microscopy and molecular cloning—nor has she hesitated to drag me well outside of mine just to film our very first short lab video.
Best of luck to both of you. You've set a high bar for everyone who follows!
July 2026 Graduation of the first high school intern, Alanna.
Alanna came to our lab to survey wild flies that only produce female offpspring, and she did find them!!! She will return to her great high school live, but her flies will still live with us.
July 2026 Graduation of the first undergraduate, Phat, and first intern, May. Phat will join the Phoebe's lab, so it's too early to say goodbye, and May will return to Canada. A new summer intern, Shin-Hua, joined the lab.
Phat was our computation master. He predicted thousands of protein-protein interactions using AlphaFold in less than a half year. We will validate his results, but won't let him know unless he buy us some snack.
May designed and generated probes for new species from scratch, and did first (and also successful) FISH experiments in the lab. Her images are better than mine, honestly.
June 2026 Pizza Party
Our new postdoc, Pei-Shang, and two summer interns, May and Alanna, joined the lab.
May 2026. Ching-Ho's first paper since he opened the lab (actually from his graduate school's work) was published in Genetics!!!

April 2026. The lab attend an EMBO Conference together.
Hung-Yu presented a flash talk, he and Chien both presented a poster.
Feb 2026. Happy Lunar New Year!
Too much food!!!
Jan 2026. Happy New Year!
Jasper (Master student), Elian (PhD student), and Phat(Undergraduate) joined the lab.
People are working hard for free food, but PIs are working hard to pay the bills.
Jan 2026. Happy Birthday to Rita!
She generously donates a wish to the lab.
Dec 2025. Happy birthday to Hung-Yu!
He hates chocolate!!!
Dec 2025. Celebrating the holiday season with IMB community
Nov 2025. Our first lab trip to Taipei 101 with honorable guests: Dr. Peter Greenberg and Dr. Caroline Harwood
Oct 2025. First-ever lab meeting since we opened, and yes, we came for the free fast food!
The ECG Lab officially launches on October 1, 2025, in room N217 of the Institute of Molecular Biology Building in Academia Sinica.
