Seminar in Educational Management
Taking Seminar in Educational Management with Dr. Joseph Gador was a turning point in my doctoral experience. This course helped clarify and solidify my understanding of principles and practices of educational leadership, governance, and strategic management, enabling us to take a critical look at how leadership theories deal with real education problems in the Philippine system.
As we journeyed through the course, we discussed the educational history of our country from the Spanish colonial period through American colonization and up to the educational reforms being pursued today. Most importantly, we identified the different roles of the three significant Philippine education agencies; Department of Education (DepEd) as they deal with basic education, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for technical-vocational education, and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for higher education. For me, the more profound appreciation of the mandates and relationships between the three agencies gave me greater insight into how educational policies developed and implemented through the various levels of education in our country.
Reflective conversations with classmates like Ma’am Angel and Sir Dom added value to the learning experience. Their opinions and professional viewpoints took the experience to another level and served to deepen reflection. The course has given me both theoretical grounding and "real world" perspective to help understand and navigate the challenges of educational leadership in the Philippine context.
