NSWTrainLink runs the XPT services run to Melbourne via Wagga and Brisbane via Grafton, and also on the Western line to Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo. These trains require bikes to be boxed, and a space reserved before travel day. Space for 5 bikes only. These trains will be replaced by new trains in the next 3 to 4 years and these will allow roll-on bicycles. We are therefore asking for roll-on to be allowed on the XPTs now.
NSWTrainLink also runs the Endeavour and the similar Xplorer trains to Tamworth, Armidale and Moree via the Hunter Valley, to Bathurst (The Bullet), to Moss Vale and Goulburn from Campbelltown and from Kiama to Bomaderry near Nowra on the south coast line. Trains also run to Canberra daily and to Griffith and Broken Hill weekly. These trains may carry unboxed bikes but guards sometimes restrict numbers. This can make travel a lottery and particularly restricts groups of cyclists. The Transport for NSW site says there is space for 3 bikes only.
Intercity trains run by Sydney Trains to Newcastle, Wollongong and Lithgow do carry unboxed bikes, and you can travel or connect to Endeavour or Explorer trains on the Sydney Network (Opal card system) to Maitland (with some services to Dungog and Scone) and from Kiama to Bomaderry, without the requirement to book or box bikes, although you are not guaranteed a place to store your bike.
NSWTrainLink coaches (purple routes on map) have a limit of two bikes per coach.
