We are attempting to get roll-on roll-off carriage of bicycles on NSW Regional trains, to replace the current requirement to box bikes. Also to include e-bikes, and increase the number of bicycles carried. Current XPT trains only allow 3 boxed bikes per train, with a 20 kg weight limit. Good design could allow up to 20 bikes in a carriage, thus enabling groups to go country touring. New trains are being introduced in 2022/25 and now is the time to make changes to the existing lack of space for bicycles on Regional Trains, XPT and Explorer types.
The response so far to requests for more bikes on trains has been to say Yes, we are looking into making some changes on access, and removing the requirement to box bikes, but not to increase the number of bikes on Regional Trains. There are mock-ups of the new trains at Bathurst and Dubbo, but requests to see the proposed layouts have been denied. They claim certain groups have been consulted but they won't say which groups. We don't know of any such groups, certainly not Bicycle NSW or local bike groups.
All dealings with the new trains are through a private company, and it is hard to get anything but stock responses.
However, the Ministers responsible are aware of the issues and we think pressure from touring cyclists and tourism operators and country communities can make a difference.
