We are a bunch of cycle touring tragics. We love to tour on two wheels and are very frustrated that it is so damned hard to do it in conjunction with trains. We want to enjoy the great NSW countryside and the quiet backroads of our very big state, spend some money and enjoy great country hospitality, without the need to bring one or more motor vehicles with us. After a few of us were refused train travel with boxed e-bikes (overweight) and, having experienced the restrictions placed on carrying bikes on trains in general, we decided we had to act.
Currently on XPT interstate and regional trains and some Endeavour and Explorer regional trains you must book a seat for yourself and also a bike space. There is a limit of 5 bikes only on XPT and 3 on some Endeavour and Explorer trains. You must partially dismantle your bike (for normal sized bikes this means remove front wheel and turn handlebars) and put it in a bike box no bigger than 135 cm by 80 cm by 24 cm, obtained from a bike shop or sometimes, if you are lucky, available at railway stations. There is a weight limit of 20 kg for bike plus box, which cuts out most e-bikes and some touring bikes with gear. There is a charge of $12.10 for the bike (October 2021).
You must get to the station one hour before departure to put your box on the train. Luggage closes half an hour before departure.
Bike plus box must weigh a maximum of 20 kg. Boxes can weigh 2 or 3 kg so this restricts carriage of some heavier bikes or any touring gear.
Maximum of five, all boxed, on XPT. Maximum of 3 on Endeavour trains. Some services allow unboxed bikes, e.g, Kiama to Bomaderry, Campbelltown to Mossvale, depending on discretion of the guard.
Trainlink Coaches will carry 2 bikes.
I ride an eBike which weighs 24kg. Can I use NSW Trainlink services?
No, currently bikes plus their box can weigh no more than 20kg in total.
