There are many great touring areas in country NSW. The western slopes are particularly scenic, from the Albury and Wagga areas in the south, Cowra and Young in central parts, to Tamworth and Narrabri in the north. Mudgee and Gulgong and the backroads out to Dubbo on the Central West Cycle Trail are also very scenic.
The Tablelands are hillier, but there is good touring around Canberra, Goulburn, Bathurst, Orange and Armidale.
Back roads are generally quiet and there are many small towns with rambling pubs, B and B's, caravan parks and farm stays and shops to stock up in. Rail Trails are springing up on old rail lines, like the Tumbarumba to Rosewood trail. The Central West Cycle Trail is a sign-posted multi-day route attracting many people. Further west the Darling River is a drawcard, with a developed tourist route linking river towns and sheep stations. The Broken Hill area and north to the Queensland border is the ultimate in outback bicycle adventure touring.
Most of these areas can be reached by train, but bicycle carriage is limited and beset by rules and regulations, such as requirement to box bikes. This campaign hopes to make it much easier to go bicycle touring in NSW, using the most energy efficient and low emission forms of transport, bikes and trains.
