Dust to Dust
A Warhammer 40K Campaign
A Warhammer 40K Campaign
Akhen-Menes surveyed the plaza in front of the great pyramid. The light and fresh air were pleasant feelings but mostly for their symbolism. The time of the slumber is over. He was back. They were back. His legions were still marching towards the gate, one after another in an endless line.
His eyes caught a fleck of some alien object that did not belong there, it was red. He enhance the image and saw it for what it was, a helmet of some sorts, cracked open and caked in a brownish fluid. There were other similar items nearby, gloves, pauldrons, weapons. A preliminary analysis revealed they were fresh, just hours old. He inspected the armor and remains of the soldiers. They were hacked to pieces by some very sharp blades but there were no tracks of the wielders of those weapons.
Further search revealed more traces of a recent battle fought in the middle of their holy city. To his dismay, he found ork bodies. He made a short analysis of the situation.
1) Orks were still present in the galaxy. That was unfortunate, but not unexpected.
2) This planet was not essential for their future plans.
3) This planet was theirs and it had a history.
4) A few more days can certainly be spent.
He changed the orders for his legions. Those that travelled beyond would wait for him. Those that remained were ordered to scan the land for traces of the orkoid race and disintegrate all their remains. This planet had to be purged because even the harsh climate might not be enough of itself to prevent the greenskins from gaining a foothold here.
All this was decided while he was still surveying the surroundings of the great portal. Luckily, the fools did not damage it, that might have proven troublesome. As he walked, he found more remains and of different origins. There were humans there too; clad in thick, cumbersome and effectively useless armor. He also found a few remains of Aeldari tech, yet no bodies could be found. These all had fought here mere hours before he emerged from the depths.
Why would they do so? Where are the victors of that fight? These were just some of the questions that pushed themselves to the forefront of his mind. Somehow he expected to find the answers after he traverses to the other planet.
The servitor beeped excitingly however impossible it might be and produced a lengthy roll of paper. The commander took it impatiently and studied it for a short while.
"We have our location!" he announced triumphantly to everybody on the main deck. Cheers went up. This was already a long endevour and he needed something substantial in his hands.
"Navigator, get us to these coordinates. And make sure all those who will no doubt follow us have a hard time doing that. We need as big a lead as possible."
---
The secret city was nothing like he imagined. The biggest difference was he thought it would be dead and silent. It seemed anything but. The buildings pulsed with unnerving green light and in sync with a strange vibrating sound. The only good news was that so far they haven't spotted a single of those damned forsaken machines.
He didn't like it but this was not the time for guns and so he stepped aside and let the techpriests do their job.
"Find anything of use or value and be quick about it," though it seemed they didn't need any extra motivation.
---
"The report, sir," the tech adept announced himself and began, "We have uncovered many repeating inscriptions and patterns on the buildings. Based on our preliminary translations, it seems they describe some form of prophecy that seems eerily topical."
The commander raised an eyebrow, "Explain yourself!"
"It describes the long slumber that will come to an end with the coming of the living. It speaks of Death in Blood and Blood in Death, of two descendant races and of a flaming head, all coming to disturb the long sleep. It says that will be the moment to awaken and travel to the promised land where they will rise and take back all that was their."
"What promised land?" the commander kept a straight face but he did not like where this was going.
"That is impossible to tell now, but we have made some very interesting readings. The Necrons are powering up some ancient device or devices. We believe their purpose is to transport them there. Yet the interesting thing is that there are monitor nodes around the city, connected to the grid. They have powered up too. We may use these nodes to learn more about that place."
"Why would that be of interest to us?"
"The legends describe it as a hidden planet in the heart of a hidden system. A planet with all the resources needed for a Necron dynasty to rise to power."
"Yes, that does sound promising," the commander admitted, "how do we learn its position?"
"Well, we access the nodes. There is a considerable chance the nodes might be damaged, yet there is more of them. The more we can access and the longer we can do so, the higher the chances of accurate data."
"You will get all the time we can buy, but if they rise now in their thousands, we won't be able to stop them."
"No need to stop them. But there is one small potential issue. We believe that their teleportation device or devices will require all their power and the nodes will go dead as soon as the process starts in earnest. So we need to access as many as possible."
---
The mission turned out far easier than he dared hope. They saw some slumbering forms of the Necron around but surprisingly they paid them no mind and just marched from place to place seemingly at random. He looked at the servitor connected to the monitor node. Data was being collected and it was time to move on. It was then when several things happened at once.
First the massive doors to the great pyramid threw open and revealed masses of Necron warriors, shoulder to shoulder, as they started to march out. At the same time, a dead construction about a kilometer away suddenly came to life and where there was just empty air, there could be seen a green floating vortex of light. The power vaned but remained stable, there was still time. At least until they reached the vortex.
"Go go go! Split up, you have the coordinates, get as many nodes as you can," he barked his orders yet just as he did so, his second in command pointed at the sky. It was dark and blackened by soot and exhaust fumes. That was not the Necron's doing.
"We've got company! Prepare to engage! Remember our priority - get the nodes, attach the servitor and protect it with your lives until we have enough!"
The silhouetes of their rivals throughout the campaign could be seen in the shadows of the great city. Now it became really interesting!
Taddeus found himself back in the main strategeum on board the Cult's ship. He could see the model of the planet below with four indicated sites. Apparently, the decision still hasn't been made.
Their leader was not one for careful planning though and he quickly grew tired of the endless flow of data from prelimiary scans, quick fly-bys by their two bombers and geological estimates.
"Here," he pointed at one of the sites. "The Emperor wills it. We strike here."
His staff knew him well enough to comment in any other way but "Yessir!"
And so it was decided and Taddeus actually didn't mind the manner of that at all. If only more Imperial commanders were as pious.
The scouting was not for him and he had decided to stay on board and watch the situation from orbit. Emperor bless us all, wasn't that a good choice. Not because of what happened to Klovis, but because of site Alpha.
If he hadn't known Alpha was just their designation and not an official one, he would have guessed all three warlords that descended on that site did so purely because of the name. They would want to prove themselves as the true alphas here.
Taddeus asked for the ships long-range scanners to focus on that site. It was certain to be quite some spectacle. And it did not disappoint. So much that he almost missed what occured at the other site...
...
Site Charlie
The wind caressed the disturbed ground softly as if carefully trying to make sure not even a small footprint remains of the unwelcomed visitors. They were all gone now. Some disappeared underneath a cover of sand, some left in their transports. The land was tranquil again and except a few wrecks still being visible, everything was as it had been before. Yet one thing was most definitely different. Something was awaken. Something was asking questions, like
"Who were the attackers?"
[UNKNOWN SPECIES, THREAT LEVEL LOW. ALL SURVIVORS HAVE BEEN ERADICATED. THE SITE IS SECURED. ASSESSMENT OF THE ENEMY IS BEING COMPILED.]
Site Delta
Dust. Dust and sand. Calm and undisturbe- no, there is movement there. Tiny metal legs were visible for a while but gone the next moment. The strange glow coming from somewhere deep below was now but a faint memory and it was almost impossible to tell a battle had taken place here. The spirit stones and elegant armor of the dead invaders were long covered by sand and only the husk of their walking machine remained as a memento.

They were finally off that accursed xenos moon-station. Taddeus was beaming. The God-Emperor has listened to all his prayers. Not only have they been delivered but they had also met other fervent servants of Him.
He took it as a sign and decided to part ways with the Rogue Trader. Not that he had much against Neyam Shai Murad, but her morals were still a bit too lax for his liking and he was ever uneasy by the proximity of the Aeldari sniper. Now he was amongst people of very similar attitudes and opinions. To make matters better - Vorne had decided to join him too. This was all very exciting.
The journey to Greco 13 took several months. When they arrived, they saw a desert planet with no life signs yet a breathable atmosphere never the less. First scans showed the remains of four inhabited areas.
The first one, designated site Alpha, was located in the middle of a vast mountain range and would definitely be a pain to get to.
Site Bravo was spread on the foot of what looked to be the remains of an immense crater or maybe a volcano.
Site Charlie was located on several hilltops quite close to each other. Taddeus found it curious that the ruins were only on the tops of the hills and nothing could be seen below a certain imaginary line.
Site Delta was just a few ruins set in the middle of a great flat area that stretched for hundreds of miles in all directions.
They were busy with the reconnaissance of the surface that it actually took them a few hours to notice the battle barge of the Blood Angels in orbit. As it turned out, more ships were inbound. There was little time. If they want to find the fabled city, they have to start searching in one of those below.
It was the commander's choice and it was a tough one. He had his suspicions about where he could find most relevant information but what if other's travel there too? Wouldn't it be smarter to go for his second choice and snatch it without having to deal with the pestering rivals? Decisions... decisions.
Full Crusade rules
For the next stage, each player has to choose a site to investigate. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie or Delta. Alternatively, they can choose a player and follow them (see below for what that means).
Please send the name of the chosen site to me before Xmas so I can start arranging the battles to be fought.
Clarificaton: You want to find information about the fifth city. That information is in the other four cities (or ruins). The stories you got shall help you decide which sites might be worth the most to investigate.
Only the winner of the battle at each site gets the information.
During the next stage, we will repeat this process but it won't be of any use to investigate the same place again (perhaps to try and deny your rivals?).
Should you decide to follow a player you automatically arrive at the location he chose. The following modifications will be applied to the battle:
Your order in the battle will be decided by the followed player
The followed player gets extra 2 CP (Command) during that battle.
That was a close one. She lost quite a few men and machines to the Ambull and it seemed it might finish all of them off, but it had suddenly turned and run away into the distance. She thought she could hear echoes of bolter fire. Problem was, she could not tell how far it was, the Blackstone played tricks on you.
Also, it freaking changed its layout and most of the time without anyone realising it. She had long learned not to trust her senses and listen more to her gut instinct. That worked better. At first she was angry, because they had spent hours wlaking in circles but when they finally made progress she could see traces of the carnage that was wrought there.
One room was packed floor to ceiling with dead bodies. Dead orks to be more specific. They were neatly arranged, with alternating facing. There must have been hundreds of them and the smell was beyond belief.
The next room was a blood bath. Literally, no bodies, not even body parts, just blood. knee deep.
She finally discovered what she was after few minutes later. The ancient scrypt. She greedily devoured the information and searched for more. The fortress perimitted her to find two more before it unerringly shoved her in the direction it desired. Or at least that's how she thought about it. Some malevolent, rogue, god-like machine spirit.
Anyways, that was just about all she was willing to suffer there. Time to get out. She had learned the position of the planet with the city of gold and its riches were waiting.
---
"Try again!" she snapped. It was the sixth time she had said that. This time proved to be no better than the previous ones. He ship was not responding. And that, despite all her wealth, training and the size of her entourage meant just one thing - she was stranded and she was going to die here.
Her long distance radio picked signals of four other vessels. The other parties were still inside it seemed and no doubt looking for a quick route out. If they had found what she had, they would be making all haste to get to that planet.
Will they be willing to take her on, though? Perhaps. Depending on what state they arrive in. She still had a sizeable group of henchmen and lickspittles. She might make them take her if it comes to that though it would be better if they did it willingly.
The sound of guns a few hours later was a clear sign that they were coming. All will be decided soon.

The labyrinth was almost his end and it was the end of many of his troops, but he found what he came for - information.
He now knows the name and location of the ancient planet, Greco-13 is its name in the Imperial archives. He has what information he was able to find about the cities there and perhaps it will be enough to find the hidden one, the one with what he wants.
The only problem now is to get there, and to get there first. Those blasted other warlords are no doubt after the same prize. And so he must escape from this accursed place which keeps on changing its layout what seems like every minute or so.
He must get out. Maybe there's the way? Yes, let's ... wait. What is that lying behind the menacing figure? No, that can't be, or can it? How would it find its way here?
He looked in the direction of the exit and where he could just see the ancient relic. Decisions, decisions...
The corridors still rang with the sounds of gunfight and strange, unnatural growls. It was a close call and only now did she have some time to recollect the events of the past hour.
The first apparent fact was that they were not alone here, besides the crazed cultists there seem to be five other forces each of a considerable strength. That was very unfortunate and she suspected the malevolent intelligence hidden in the fortress was behind the fact that their paths crossed.
Yet she had her faithful with her now and what is more got a glimpse at something which might make this whole endevour worth it. The ancient runescript she found in the deep tunnels and saved for later decryption were unknown to her systems. Fortunately, the tech adept was able to decipher its meaning. It hinted at something great but the information itself was useless, she needed to know more.
Her remaining forces spread and began to search the surroundings trying to find more runes or signs of the rest of her associates but wary of running into some of her competitors. It was the machine that reported success, it still gave her the creeps but it was proving to be more useful than most of her other crew. They all followed the big hulking servitor ever deeper into the fortress, or quite possibly closer to the surface, it was beyond impossible to tell.
After few hours she spotted the first symbols. Successful indeed! Extra portion of WD-40 was issued to the machine as they followed the inscriptions. Her joy soon turned sour as the easy to navigate corridor quickly turned into a gigantic maze.
As they were about to enter, they heard a noise and the tech adept reported signals on his scanners. The precious information she needed was hidden somewhere inside, but so were at least some of her rivals. She checked her pistols and signalled to advance.

The Fortress loomed ahead of them, impossibly huge as the transport ships made their way towards its surface. Every second the scanners would pick up yet another wrecked or perhaps just abandoned transport drifting idly in the void. Their crews no doubt were once as hopeful as they were now, intent to find untold riches in the black depths that according to reports seem to have a mind of their own.
Something most captains would discard as hearsay and nonsense, but they knew better. They have seen things in this universe that were beyond reason and suddenly nothing seemed impossible.
Most transport ships survived the descent towards the fortress' surface with only minor damage though there were some losses. The last thing the pilots reported were surprised shouts that "it's moving" followed by static and a little blink on their scanners.
One more drifting hulk.
But that was just the beginning of their troubles. After managing to breach the surface and get into the fortress itself they found themselves in a labyrinth of winding corridors, strangely lit rooms and doors that had a habit of appearing and disappearing on a whim.
They knew that nothing of value would be found so close to surface, not with so many treasure hunters trying their luck here. They had to go deeper, somewhere the small bands of outcasts and pirates did not dare. Then again, they were only small bands, not proper fighting body like they had.
They delved deeper, covering corners, ready to engage any hostiles but the fortress was silent. The swift progress lasted for four hours. At that time the fortress had finally seemed to notice their presence.
At was soon after they encountered strange glyphs and writings on the walls in a runic scrypt none of them new but still could somehow subconscioussly understand. They spoke of some great culture with earth-shattering weapons and relics of unconceivable power. Definitely something worth investigating further, yet the fortress had other plans.
With a cracking sound, the walls around them began to move. Some transformed into vast horizontal shafts and many lives were lost in the great depths tumbling to their death. Doors opened and closed at a whim, deadly traps sprang and more lives were snuffed. After an hour or so, the fortress calmed down.
The leader of a great host suddenly found himself alone in the dark.
After a while she heard shots and shouts recognizing an element of her force. She began to run.

<The fringes of the imperium>
A Blackstone fortress has appeared seemingly out of nowhere just outside the Imperial space. It has attracted many explorers and adventurers from dozens of different species and the news soon spread far and wide attracting even more. The small trickle of individuals soon became a flood of whole bands and organizations trying to get a slice of what was to be found there.
Stories spread. Nobody talked about all those who lost their lives trying to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the fortress, everybody talked only about those who returned, their pockets and bags heavy with ancient archeotech and other items. Priceless art pieces, gold and other precious materials, weapons and unknown energy sources, everything you could think of. The blackstone fortress had it all. And it was all wasted on those fools.
The calling of the Fortress soon reached some powerful leaders far in the void and they listened to it intently. If a rag-tag band of human outcasts is able to find great treasures on board and get out alive, just imagine what a dedicated, experienced and well-trained group could achieve.
Arrangements have been made, provisions stockpiled, warriors assembled. Destination - Precipice, the impromptu space station from which expeditions were launched into the fortress itself.
