D&AD: BBC Radio

Welcome the BBC Wireless: designed to be a match up of sleek modernism and retro woodgrain the device is made to be a working radio emitting news of the local area, the volume of which can be turned up and down through the central dial.

Working on the D&AD brief from the BBC for the year 2020, in a group we were tasked to “Use the BBC to create a new intersection of physical and data”.

To spread your own news, the only thing needed is your voice. By flipping the device front the speaker/white face to the wood grain speaker, the user can tell their own news to then be admitted through the frequency. This can be done for group events, gatherings or shop/business advertisements all for your local area.

Through research it was found that most young people do not interact outside of their small social groups and only ever hear of the news of the wider world through applications such as BBC News. It became our mission to intersect the divide: reconnect the young with their surroundings.

This concept board incorporated the design, colours and general explanation of the initial idea.
