Overall Box Dimensions: Construct the final box assembly to match target dimensions of 10 in. Tall × 12 in. Wide × 8 in. Deep, maintaining a tolerance within 1/16" across all finished outer dimensions.
Integrated Side Feet & Cutouts: Extend the carcass side panels to form integrated feet that are decorative bottom profile cutouts while leaving solid ground contact points at the front and back corners to ensure a stable, level stance.
Top Panel Edge Profile & Overhang: Size and attach the top panel with a uniform 3/4 in. overhang on the front and two sides, keeping the back edge completely flush with the carcass body. Router-face only the three overhanging edges with a decorative profile (e.g., chamfer, roundover, or ogee), leaving the back edge square and unrouted.
Dual Drawer Assembly & Flush-Fit Faces: Construct two functional drawers, each fitted with a false drawer front (overlay face) sized to fully conceal the surrounding carcass gaps while maintaining a uniform 1/16" reveal tolerance around all edges.
Joinery Mastery: Utilize Rabbets and Dados that are 5/16" Deep
Screw Joinery & Plug Finish: Fasten structural joints using countersunk screws, and conceal all exposed screw heads by gluing and flush-trimming hardwood or pine dowel plugs.
Integrated Wooden Slide Mechanism: Route matching grooves and wooden runners directly into the pine carcass and drawer sides as shown in the Wooden Drawer Slide Guide.
Precision Finishing: Pre-sand all pine components to 220 grit to minimize cross-grain scratches, treat end grain properly, and ensure smooth, bind-free drawer action.
Stock Material: All main components (carcass and drawer boxes) must be milled from standard 1x6 pine that is Planed to 5/8". (actual dimensions:3/4"x5-1/2")
Glue-Up Requirement: Any component wider than 5-1/2" (e.g., deep sides or tops) must be fabricated by edge-gluing 1x6 boards using biscuits for alignment and strength.
Drawer Bottom Panel: Must use a 1/4 in. pine or cabinet-grade plywood panel, fully captured in a 1/4" dado groove around the inside drawer frame.
Hardware Restrictions: No metal drawer slides or mechanical fasteners permitted on the outer carcass body (joinery and biscuit glue-ups only).
Tolerances & Friction: Drawer reveal must be uniform within 1/16", and all sliding pine-on-pine surfaces must be coated with paste wax to prevent soft pine wood friction from sticking or binding.
Centered Drawer Pulls: Install a wooden or metal pull centered precisely horizontally and vertically on each false drawer front.
Phase 1: Design & Planning
Drafting Technical Plans: Create a detailed build-packet (isometric and multi-view orthographic drawings) to hit target overall dimensions of 10" H × 12" W × 8" D.
Cut List & Bill of Materials: Calculate component dimensions, factoring in 5/16" joinery depth in 5/8" stock material and 1/16" drawer reveal tolerances.
Phase 2: Panel Fabrication & Milling Sequence
Edge-Gluing Panels: Joint stock edges and glue up narrow boards into wider blank panels for the top, carcass sides, and drawer fronts using pipe or band clamps with uniform pressure to ensure tight, seamless gluelines.
Thickness Planing: Once glue assemblies are fully cured and glue squeeze-out is scraped clean, run the glued-up panels through the planer to bring all stock down to a uniform final thickness of 5/8 in.
Order of Operations: Rip the planed panels to final width, chop to square initial reference ends, and then drop to length on the crosscut table saw or miter saw.
Phase 3: Carcass & Integrated Feet Machining
Integrated Feet Layout & Cutouts: Layout the arched/shaped bottom profile cutouts on the bottom edge of both side panels. Cut using a scroll saw, band saw, or router, and sand the profiles smooth prior to assembly.
Joinery Machining: Cut 5/16" deep rabbets and dadoes into the carcass panels to receive the horizontal shelf and back panel.
Dry Assembly Check: Clamp carcass components together without glue to verify squareness, alignment, and footprint dimensions.
Phase 4: Carcass Assembly & Fastening
Countersink & Fasten: Glue joints, square the carcass, and drive screws into pre-drilled, countersunk pilot holes.
Dowel Plugging: Apply wood glue to dowel plugs, insert them into countersunk holes, allow to dry, and flush-trim with a flush-cut saw. Sand flush with the panel surface.
Phase 5: Drawer Construction & Hardware Mounting
Drawer Box Fabrication: Construct the inner drawer boxes to maintain a clean 1/16" gap around the opening.
Overlay Drawer Fronts: Size and mount false drawer fronts so they overlap the carcass opening evenly, concealing internal gaps.
Hardware Layout: Locate and mark exact horizontal and vertical centers on the false fronts. Drill pilot holes and install the matte black metal T-bar pulls.
Phase 6: Top Panel Fabrication & Edge Routing
Top Panel Sizing: Dimension the top panel to provide a uniform 3/4" overhang on the front and two sides while keeping the back edge completely flush with the rear of the carcass.
Profile Routing: Router-face the three overhanging edges (front, left, right) with a decorative profile (e.g., chamfer, roundover, or ogee). Leave the back edge square and unrouted.
Top Attachment: Secure the top panel firmly to the carcass.
Phase 7: Final Sanding & Finishing
