The past year has been a transformative journey for me as a participant in the Honors Seminar on International Institutions. This course has provided me with invaluable insights into the critical role international institutions play in addressing global challenges. Through engaging discussions, rigorous research, and a captivating study tour in Belgium and the Netherlands, I have deepened my understanding of the complexities surrounding transnational justice, human rights, and equality. In this reflection, I will elaborate on the impact this experience has had on my personal, academic, and professional goals, and outline my aspirations for the upcoming year.
The seminar's focus on international institutions and their response to global challenges aligned perfectly with my passion for politics and global issues. From the onset, I was captivated by the multifaceted nature of the issues we explored, including global pandemics, international terrorism, economic growth, and migration. As I actively participated in group discussions, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by international institutions in the post-COVID world. I learned how these institutions adapt to emerging threats, overcome obstacles, and strive for positive change.
Independent Research: Energy Crisis in the EU and Renewable Energy Transition
The research component of the course presented an opportunity for me to delve deeper into a topic of personal interest. I chose to focus my efforts on the Energy Crisis in the European Union (EU) and explored how international institutions can ensure energy security through renewable energy transition. The extensive research process enabled me to synthesize information from a wide range of sources and critically analyze the complexities surrounding this issue. By presenting my findings to the class, I not only enhanced my research and analytical skills but also deepened my understanding of the energy challenges that lie ahead for the EU and the world at large.
Study Abroad:
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the course was the study tour component in Belgium and the Netherlands. This experience was beyond my expectations, as I had the privilege to engage with diplomats and officials from renowned institutions such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), International Court of Justice (ICJ), European Commission, and European Parliament. The opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the EU's most pressing issues with these experts was an eye-opening experience. It not only broadened my horizons but also affirmed my passion for transnational justice and human rights advocacy.
The study tour was not only academically enriching but also an unforgettable cultural experience. Exploring the vibrant cities, museums, and historical landmarks of Belgium and the Netherlands with like-minded classmates fostered a sense of camaraderie and intellectual growth. The exposure to diverse perspectives and the fusion of cultures during this journey have shaped me in profound ways, fostering open-mindedness, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability.
