We did research in three areas. Namely the growth of the baby in the first 6 months, what it is like traveling with a baby and how it works when a baby needs to learn four languages. The different research areas can be seen below.
Growth of a baby
Traveling with a baby
Listed below is some important information from the research we did on general growth of a baby. (Your Child’s Developmental Milestones From 0 To 6 Months, n.d.) The baby we are designing for is at the start of the project 4 months old. From the months of 1-3 it can be noted that the baby can see colors and can follow objects with their eyes in month 4.
1 month old:
Lay on tummy
Start using head muscles
Eyes start to focus on objects
See only black and white
Starts to use their hands
2 months old:
Respond to voices
More alert and more awake
Sit upright with support
Start to see colors
Start to learn toys in their hands
3 months old:
Control head muscles
Follow object with their eyes
Repeats sounds that they hear
Move their arm and legs out of excitment
4 months old:
Your baby will roll their body from front to back. They’ll be able to hold their head steady in line with their body. This will stop their head lagging behind their shoulders when lifted.
Your baby will:
- laugh out loud
- move their body towards a voice
- make sounds like “ah-goo”
- listen to people who are talking
- make a vocal sound when a person stops talking
Your baby will reach for objects and look at them while holding.
5 months old:
Your baby will roll their body from back to front. They’ll lift their head when sitting.
They’ll move objects from 1 hand to the other.
Your baby will:
- smile and make vocal sounds when they see themselves in a mirror
- mimic a person’s voice by making vocal sounds
- make ‘raspberry’ (spitting) sounds
Your baby can reach out and grasp a dangling object. They'll start to look at small objects with interest.
6 months old:
Your baby will be able to sit with support. They may prop themselves on their hands.
Your baby may:
- get upset when they cannot see their main caregiver
- recognize familiar faces
- smile more often - especially at their parents or main caregiver
- try to hold their bottle while drinking
Your baby will look to the floor when they drop a toy.
The baby can grow teeth from now on, they like to chew on something when it hurts.
The baby can be interested in things that make sound.

We also did research on traveling with a baby.
Traveling by plane is a bit more complicated than traveling by car. The most important thing by traveling by car is having a car seat that is properly installed to keep the baby safe. Experts advice to take breaks to change diapers, feed the baby and stretching legs every two or three hours. Parents should consider that traveling with a baby is not for light packers.
Traveling with a baby on an airplane, can be done in two ways. Holding the baby on the parent’s lap or booking a separate seat. While babies generally travel free on domestic flights, a ticket must be reserved for them. For international flights, a fee applies, usually a percentage of the adult fare.
What do consider when travelling with a baby?
Wait until baby is 3 months old
Choose between lap or an airplane seat
Know the airline’s policy for baby travel essentials
Plan diaper changes ahead (so you prevent doing it on the plane)
Book flights according to the baby’s sleep schedule (so that the baby is sleeping)
Consult your paediatrician if your baby is sick
Time feedings for take-off and landing
Carry proof of age (e.g. birth certificate)
Choose an aisle seat
Rent baby equipment at your destination
Arrive at the gate early
Pack extra baby supplies
Dress your baby in Layers
Book a nonstop flight if possible
Consider a travel insurance plan
Learning four languages
We started with doing research about baby's who grow up with more than one language to learn. After doing research in the area of bilingual kids we discovered that it does not matter that much if the baby needs to learn two languages or four languages. It could only take longer for the baby to start speaking.
