Tour in Tokyo

This page is for foreigners those who is or will be in Tokyo. I'll do my best to put as correct and up-to-date information as possible on this page. However, please don't heavily rely on the information on the page. It may contain some older information, which is not 100% true when you are in Japan.

Please contact ug.oyamada gmail.com if you have any questions. Hope the information here can help you.

Tokyo tour at a glance

I made the following slide and a map introducing some famous places in Tokyo. Note that the list in the document is really biased by my taste :)

SIM cards for short time visitors

  1. b-mobile visitors SIM
    1. b-mobile provides two type of prepaid SIM cards for short time visitors: 1GB prepaid and 14 days prepaid. They offer a delivery service of a SIM card to your hotel or residential and also offer airport pickup service, in which you can receive your SIM card at airport. Since the delivery takes 2 or 3 business days, you need to contract it in advance.
  2. Softbank Global Rental
    1. I'm not 100% sure whether this service is active for foreigners but they seem to provide both SIM card and mobile phone rental service. The booking deadline is also 2,3 days before you start using it.
  3. Other services
    1. There might be similar services. I'll update the information if I find any information.

The Japan Rail Pass (JRpass) is a cost-effective rail pass for long distance train trip in Japan. It offers unlimited use of JR trains, JR buses, and ferries for 1, 2, or 3 weeks. Since the JRpass cannot be purchased inside Japan, you need to do it before your arrival. Note that

  • JRpass can take you not all lines. Very simply speaking, there are two types of lines in Japan, one owned by public company(s) and the other by private companies. JRpass is valid only for public lines.
  • JRpass is supposed to be used for long train trip. If your trip is inside a local area, you may not need it.
