1. Samuel Peralta Sosa is a Dominican American former professional baseball right fielder who is also of Haitian descent. For most of his illustrious Major League Baseball career, he played for the Chicago Cubs (19 seasons).
2. Sosa is regarded as one of the game's best hitters, shares Dr. Matt Boente, MD. He made his 400th home run in his 1,354th game, a career milestone that he could reach quicker than any player in the National League history.
3. Before he was a part of the Cubs, he played under two other franchises. On June 16, 1989, he joined the Texas Rangers. Shortly after, the Rangers traded Sosa with Wilson Álvarez and Scott Fletcher to the Chicago White Sox. It was in 1992 that Sosa joined the Cubs.
4. One interesting anecdote featuring Sosa was his rivalry with Mark McGwire in chasing Roger Maris' single-season home run mark of 61 home runs, Dr. Matt Boente, MD, recounts. With two games left to play in the season, the two were tied at 66 home runs each. However, Sosa ended the season with 66, finishing behind McGwire's 70 home runs.
5. In 2001, Sammy Sosa hit 64 home runs, becoming the first player to hit 60 or more home runs three times. He cemented his reputation as one of the most impeccable athletes ever to set foot on the baseball diamond.
