Captain Greg Thomas graduated from Washington State University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science. That same year, he received his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, and reported for flight training. He was designated a Naval Aviator in May 1986.
Following his initial Fleet Replacement Pilot Training at Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Three (HC-3) flying the H-46, Captain Thomas reported to the Gunbearers of
HC-11 in San Diego, CA. During this tour he made Western Pacific and Indian Ocean deployments aboard the USS Wabash (AOR-5) and the USS Wichita (AOR-1).
In July 1990, he reported to HC-3 as a fleet replacement instructor pilot and two years later, served on the USS Coronado (AGF-11), the Commander Third Fleet Flagship, as the Air Boss and Safety Officer. After earning Officer of the Deck Underway qualifications, he reported to Commander Helicopter Tactical Wing Pacific as the H-46 class desk and Operations Officer.
In October 1996, he served as Officer in Charge of Detachment 6 aboard USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) and as Administrative Officer at Anderson AFB, Guam.
In November 1998 Captain Thomas reported to United States Strategic Command in Omaha, NB, where he served as Branch Chief for Pacific Command in the J55 Division. Captain Thomas reported as Executive Officer in May 2002 and subsequently, Commanding Officer of HC-11 in San Diego, the Navy’s largest operational helicopter squadron with over 400 assigned personnel.
In June of 2004, Captain Thomas reported to the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania as a student, earning a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies July 2005 and in July 2005, he was sent to United States Northern Command in Colorado Springs, CO, serving as Crew Commander in the NORTHCOM Command Center and as Vice-Director for the Office of the Secretary of Defense Joint Test and Evaluation, Joint Integrated Command and Control for Maritime Homeland Defense (JICM) project.
Captain Thomas’ awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various campaign and service awards. Captain Thomas retired on 01 September 2009 after serving 25 years of active duty to his country.
Captain Thomas has acted as the Senior Naval Science Instructor for the Doherty Navy JROTC since 2010.
Senior Chief Petty Officer Tony Cook graduated from Amsterdam High School N.Y. in 1979. Shortly after, Senior Chief would enlist into the U.S. Navy on July 7th, 1981, graduating from Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Illinois in September. He would continue his rate training at Operations Specialist “A” School in Dam Neck, Virginia graduating in December of 1981.
In January of 1982, Senior Chief forward deployed to his first duty station as an Operations Specialist aboard USS Lockwood (FF-1064) homeport Yokosuka, Japan as part of the USS Midway (CV-41) battlegroup through February 1984. His next duty station was at the Fleet Combat Training Center, Pacific San Diego, California for advanced rate training.
Following training’s end, Senior Chief reported to his third duty station aboard the USS Fife (DD-991) homeport San Diego, California. During his two-year tour, he deployed to the Western Pacific twice.
Soon after, Senior Chief went to the Naval Education Training Support Center in July of 1986. After graduation in July of 1987, Senior Chief would report to the USS Cleveland (LPD-7) homeport San Diego, California. He would serve aboard the Cleveland for five years.
In March of 1992, Senior Chief would return to the Pacific Fleet Combat Training Center, receiving specialized training in driving LCAC Assault Craft. Utilizing his new training, Senior Chief would report to Assault Craft Unit Five in Campen, California in August 1995. In September of 1999, Senior Chief would reassign to the Pacific Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, where he instructed students in operating LCAC Assault Crafts.
Senior Chief Cook retired from the Navy on January 31, 2003, after serving 22 years of active duty to his country. Shortly after, Senior Chief was employed as a Naval Science Instructor for Navy JROTC at Los Alamos High School for 3 years. He later served as the Naval Science Instructor at Mesa Ridge High School, Colorado Springs, Colorado for 12 years, before finding his way to Thomas B. Doherty High School in 2020.
