Once your sculpt is complete, the next step is to optimize it for VR performance. You can monitor the triangle count directly in the ZBrush interface (usually at the top bar or via Tool > Geometry > Polycount).
The recommended polygon count.
Depending on your target platform, you should optimize your 3D models and scenes accordingly:
Meta Quest
Polygon Budget: Less than 1.200.000 triangles
Notes: Highly recommended to keep scenes lightweight due to hardware limitations of standalone VR.
Apple Vision Pro
Polygon Budget: Less than 14.000.000 triangles
Notes: Performance drops with overly complex geometry.
PlayStation VR / SteamVR (PCVR)
Polygon Budget: Over 1.200.000 triangles supported
Notes: Supports heavier scenes, but optimization is still critical to ensure smooth performance and reduce load times.
Function: Significantly reduces polygon count while preserving most visual details. Perfect for creating lightweight versions of high-poly models.
Access: ZPlugin > Decimation Master
Steps:
With your model selected, click Pre-process Current.
Set the Decimation % (e.g., 10% or 5% depending on your needs).
Click Decimate Current to apply the reduction.
Keep your final model under 1.200.000 tris to ensure good performance in VR.
Function: Generates clean, animation-ready topology. Also great for UV generation and texture baking.
Access: Tool > Geometry > ZRemesher
Steps:
Set a Target Polygon Count (e.g., 5k, 10k depending on your asset budget).
Adjust settings like Adaptive Size and Curve Strength if needed.
Click ZRemesh to generate new geometry.
Function: Simplifies UV creation and layout for proper texture mapping.
Access: ZPlugin > UV Master
Steps:
(Optional) Enable Control Painting to define seam and protection areas.
Click Unwrap to automatically generate UVs.
Preview the result using Flatten.
Proper UVs are essential for applying seamless textures and materials.
