To ensure smooth performance within the VR4Life platform, it's essential to follow best practices when preparing and exporting 3D models. Below are detailed optimization guidelines regarding polygon count, textures, materials, UVs, and more.
The recommended polygon count.
Depending on your target platform, you should optimize your 3D models and scenes accordingly:
Meta Quest
Polygon Budget: Less than 1.200.000 triangles
Notes: Highly recommended to keep scenes lightweight due to hardware limitations of standalone VR.
Apple Vision Pro
Polygon Budget: Less than 14.000.000 triangles
Notes: Performance drops with overly complex geometry.
PlayStation VR / SteamVR (PCVR)
Polygon Budget: Over 1.200.000 triangles supported
Notes: Supports heavier scenes, but optimization is still critical to ensure smooth performance and reduce load times.
Use tools like Decimate, Remesh, or manual retopology to reduce polygon count without sacrificing visual quality.
Keep in mind: well-organized materials and UVs play a crucial role in performance and rendering efficiency.
Ideal texture sizes: 512x512px up to 2048x2048px.
Use efficient formats such as JPG or PNG.
A high-quality texture does not need to be high resolution — it's about smart usage and proper scale.
Keep your scene optimized for the VR4Life app by avoiding unnecessary high-res textures.
Merge materials whenever possible to reduce draw calls.
Use optimized shaders. When exporting to GLB, only the following channels are preserved:
Albedo (Base Color)
Roughness
Metallic
Emission
Avoid procedural textures — use only baked image textures.
For glass materials, use Alpha transparency only. Avoid complex shader setups.
Use one UV map per material.
Ensure UVs are clean, scaled uniformly, and properly applied.
Avoid overlapping unless intended (e.g., for mirrored parts).
Clean and organized UVs help avoid shading and texture issues in VR.
Keep each character or scene element within the 1.200.000 tris limit, understanding this number may vary depending on:
Number of animations
Material complexity
Scene density
A well-optimized mesh and UV layout can drastically improve performance, even at higher tris counts.
Properly naming your objects is essential. Use a consistent format such as:
CAMERA001, CAMERA002, CAMERA003...
This allows the system to automatically recognize and manage your cameras or key objects within the VR4Life platform.
Important: Export animated models separately from static models. This ensures that animations work correctly and independently inside the application.
Before exporting, apply all transformations to your models:
Ctrl + A > Apply All Transforms
This prevents interaction and positioning errors when the model is loaded into the VR environment.
Remove unnecessary objects, such as unused meshes, cameras, and lights, from your scene before export. Keeping your scene clean reduces file size and avoids unexpected behavior in the application.
